My tour to kaluk/rinchenong/uttarey/pelling
I have recenty visited west sikkim from 25th march to 30th march , 2012

Day 1 : we , 6 members of our family ( me, my wife, my 2yr 2 mnths old daughter, my dada, his wife and their 8 yrs old daughter ) started for west sikkim by paharia express. My first visit was for kaluk. I contacted Mr. Subrata Sarkar who was owner of kanchan valley tourist lodge earlier. I got his contact no.( 9733136939) from net itself. We had some preliminary talk about our stay at the hotel .Then he gave me the no of Mr. John chetri ( 7407817661 ).He is the new owner of this hotel. I then talked to him for a car from NJP to kaluk . It costs Rs. 2500/- ( scorpio). Small car has almost the same rate as told by him.

Day 2 :We left NJP at 09:30 a.m and took our lunch at 11:00 a.m on the way. It was a nice restaurant, clean enough. We had fish thali for Rs.80/- each and dal/rice for our little members. You can also have momos but it is better to have lunch as there is no rice/dal avaiable ahead on the way. On the way we took a rest for 15 mins at jorthang and had our moneybag loaded as you will get no ATM at kaluk or rinchenpong. We had to take rest for another reason also. Little members did potty in a sweet shop toilet which is in the jorthang bazar area. The people are so nice as they didn’t think twice to give us to use their personal tolet. Anyway we reached kaluk at 03:00 p.m .Normally it takes 5 hrs. to reach. We then entered the hotel kanchan valley tourist lodge. It is nicely placed at the very small bazar area. It is the only budget hotel at kaluk other than those three luxury resorts. For the old people it is obvious to stay at this hotel bcz all the resorts are very steep downhill. So for a little roam around the bazar u will have to go steep uphill. We talked to the hotel manager SAGAR for two dauble bed rooms. He showed us two non view rooms at third floor and asked for Rs.600/- each. But we payed only Rs.400/- each room. He showed us view room also and asked Rs.1200/- each room.We wanted to pay Rs.500/- for view room but he didn’t agree. After a quick fresh up and a relax bath with hot water we went to the bazar area for momos and hot drinks .But we were late and we didn’t get momo at that time . We came back to our hotel and started enjoying our evening at the roof top restaurant. Thankfully we were the only tourist at that time in the hotel. So total area was just like our home. Sagar and his wife and another lady were always ready to serve their best to us. We were just overwhelmed by their hospitality. At dinner we took roti and eggtarka and a delisious dal and rice for little members. Drinking at the roof top restaurant was so nice to remember for long long time.

Day 3 : At the morning we took luchi alurdam at roof top restaurant. All the menu served by sagar were so nice to eat. Four pieces luchi with alurdam costs only Rs 30/-.Then we took a car(wagonR) from kaluk bazar for Rs 70/- for rinchenpong. We decided to do sight seeing at rinchenpong by walk. One can also book a full car for Rs. 500/- for sight seeing. But it is really nice to walk at village area and you can easily cover all the spot by walk only.
First we visited rinchenpong monastry . It is half an hour walk uphill from the bazar area.
The monastry is a small one. But we were unlucky as the monastry was closed then. On the way down through the jungle area( showed by local people) we went to british dakbanglow where rabindranath tagore stayed for few days. After that we were shown poison lake though total dry by the local people. It has nothing to watch unless historical value. Then we came down to bazar area for lunch. It was haat bar at the day in rinchenpong. The ladies in the team started shopping as this is their birthright. Then we looked for lunch. But nowhere we were getting rice. Then we decided to take some fast food like aluparata or chowmin..( Egg chowmin(full plate) Rs.30/- ; aluparatha Rs.20/- ; momo 8 pcs- Rs.20/- only.). The foods were really tasty. The fast food centre is just located at the centre of the bazar area. If you wish to take rice fish or eggcurry etc. at lunch then you have to order it before you start sight seeing. Then only on return you will get ur lunch ready. After lunch we visited rabindra smriti van. There is a monastry just at the entry to the van. We spent some time at the park and then returned to the bazar again at around 03:00 p.m. As we had prior talk with the car driver , we called him and he took us to kaluk again by Rs70/-.
At night we had lunch with chilly chicken 6 pcs (Rs.110/-); chicken munchurian 6 pcs (Rs.110/-) and peas polao Rs.60/- each plate. And khichri for the little members.

Day 4: We took the hotel car(scorpio) for Rs. 1200/-( season time Rs. 1500/-) for full day uttorey tour. On the way we passed through beatiful village bermiok. Mr. Subrata sarkar has his own hotel at this place. The hotel is nicely located. One can contact him directly for stay at bermiok. Then we reached at HEE village. We spent about one hour at hee ROCK garden, took so many photos. Then we left hee gaon. We then reached SINGSHOR BRIDGE. We took momos (8 pcs Rs25/-)and ram( 60 ml Rs.30/-) at the cafeteria beside the bridge. Then we left the place for uttorey. It was a vally and so many hotels are there. We visited trout fish breeding centre. On the way return we tried for food at DENTAM valley but again we coudnt find a single hotel for lunch. Then we called our hotel manager sagar for making our lunch ready. By the time we reached at kaluk our lunch was all ready. We all became RAKHYOS as we were so hungry that time and dal rice egg curry were like amrito to us at that time.
But if you dnt stay at uttorey you can not feel the beauty of this place.

Day 5 : Next day we headed for pelling. Again we booked the hotel car for Rs1200/-( season time Rs.1500/-)for pelling drop. THE DAYS WE SPENT AT KALUK WE COULDN’T EVEN UNDERSTAND THE LOCATION OF KANCHENJUNGA AS THE WEATHER BETRAYED SO BADLY.
On the way to pelling we saw CHANGEY falls. We didn’t have hotel booking at pelling. After a little search we booked two view rooms at hotel VIEW POINT at upper pelling just beside play ground. They asked for Rs600/-. But we payed only Rs 400/-. The rooms were so big and spacious. The bathrooms were very very clean. The hotel boys, cook all are bengali people. Their hospitality were very nice again. But they don’t run the geyser 24 hrs .That is not required either. On requirement of hot water just give a call to the reception from room intercom and your geyser will be on. We stayed with our little baby. But still we didn’t face any problem with hot water. After having a very good lunch made by bengali cook we went to pelling market for a little roam around. We topped up our money from the SBI atm located just at the market place. It is better to carry hot drink from kaluk bcz registered OFF-SHOP is little downhill from the hotel VIEW POINT.
At night we had dinner with chicken kassa ( only 2 pcs. Rs. 80/- per plate !!!) and roti.
They prepared dal/rice and fish curry for the children.

Day 6 : We had a little foggy view of some peaks of KANCHENJUNGA in the early morning which disappeared after some time.We had our breakfast with luchi alu curry( Rs 35/-) and tasty aluparatha(Rs.20/-). We booked a whole car from the hotel itself for Rs 1200/-
(season time Rs.1500/-) for half day tour. We visited rimbi falls, rimbi rock garden, KANCHENJUNGA falls, khechuperi lake and in addition to that pemiyanshi monastry. The next half tour we already had bcs it includes sinshor bridge, dentam valley, alpine cheese factory ( nothing to watch really), changey falls earlier. We started at 09:00 a.m at the morning and returned back to hotel at 02:00 p.m . Then we took our lunch with fish thali ( Rs 80/-) at our hotel which was ordered at the morning.
At the evening it started raining heavily with big wind following. We went to sleep with a hope if we can see the full range of kanchnzgha next morning.

Day 7 :Waking up at 05:00 a.m and looking through the room window I noticed that sky is pretty clear. And the god is started showing her beauty. After a quick fresh up we went to the restaurant balcony from where the full range is quite visible. After that for about 2 hrs. we saw the beauty of KANCHENJUNGA brighter and brighter with the sun light. It was unforgettable.
It was our return day. We booked the car for NJP at Rs. 2200/- ( season time rate Rs.2500/-) from the hotel itself. We started our journey at 13:00 hr for paharia express. Bye bye sikkim.
Some information ::
You will never gate share jeep for kaluk or rinchenpong from NJP.
You may gate share jeep for pelling for Rs 200/-(apprx.) from NJP.
From kaluk it is difficult to go uttorey by share jeep as share jeep may not be available all the time. In that case you have to break ur journey at dentam. But from dentam to uttorey share jeep is very rare.
From kaluk to pelling share jeep may be available and the price s Rs.53/- per head but the timing is very early in the morning( around 07:00 a.m)
For pelling full day tour reserved car rate is Rs 1900 /-– Rs.2000/-
For pelling full day tour share jeep rate Rs. 253/- per head.
From pelling to NJP share jeep rate Rs.170/- (apprx.)

Regards,
MANOJ

Exclamation @ The veterans

One small doubt I got regarding hiring of cars for Sikkim.Dear IMers if you can please throw some light........
I heard that if I hire a car, from NJP, for few days, which got a Bengal registration number, would need to take special permission from certain offices for entering Sikkim. Is that true??
Do no follow where the path may lead
Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail

@ All the veterans of IM

Hi!I have made arrangements for my next trip to Sikkim after more than a decade!!!!
Will start from Siliguri early morning of 16th May,2012.
Shall descend for Siliguri on 21st May,2012 for train on morning of 22nd.
I got 4 clear days and 2 days for ascending and descending.
The places I got in mind to visit are,Uttarey-Rinchenpong-Kaluk-Bermiok-Hee-Pelling-Dentam-Yaksum.
We are 7 adults(5 are senior citizens) and 1 child(3 years). What about renting a car like Innova/Tavera for 6 days(NJP-NJP)??How much will they charge for a dry car??
I am bit confused about the places to stay.......read a lot about Kaluk,Uttarey. What about Rinchenpong/Bermiok??I live on the beauty of the Himalayas and can gaze at the beauty till I fall asleep!!
Please throw some light.......
