Trekking Tashiding to Gangtok

Hi,

I will be travelling in Sikkim at the end of the month and I am looking to travel independently. I plan to arrive into Pelling from Darjeeling and to do the 3 day trek across to Tashiding.

However, from there I want to get back to Gangtok and was wondering if there is a trekking route across that is covered by a standard permit and how long it would take to walk (and distance)? I am thinking of this because according to the Lonely Planet guide it looks quite difficult to travel independently from village to village on this route using shared jeeps.

Also does anyone know a good source for buying detailed maps showing the off-road trails across Sikkim?
