Hi Kumar,

I was in Sikkim last Novemeber for 7 days. Went there alone. And found a nrew meaning to life. The whole trip, including airfare (BLR-KOL-BLR)cost me about Rs.18,000.

There are lots of hotels there that you can crash into. I too visited Only North Sikkim, and trust me, I was blown away. Away from all the misery that's around urban dwellings. Let me know exactly when you plan to go there. I can give you some tel. numbers.

Hola,

14th of November is good to travel. I went there during the last week of Nov. And it turned out to be perfect. You'll find lots of inexpensive and good hotels to stay in coz it's d end of the season during Nov end. I stayed at a modest place that cost me about 300 bucks per night. But the best part of the hotel was it's privacy and the hoooot water it served it's guests. You can find cheaper rooms too. But i suggest that you stay at a good hotel. You'll need a permit to visit Changu Lake (or Tsomogo lake, as the locals call it there) and Nathula Pass. That can be easily arranged for by any local cab driver or tours operator. Don't forget to carry your driver's licesnse. You'll need to take a one night-two days tour to visit Yumthang & Yumsongdong. It's cost you about 1,000 bucks per head. It's going to be quite a cold affair. And yes, you'll find snow. Lots of snow. Plus wild yaks gazing in the country side.

Lemme know if u need more help. I can give you the cost breakup of my week long stay in Sikkim.

Hi,

Thats cool i don't mind a hotel which costs 500 to 600. Is it wise for me to book the package to yumthang and gurudongmar well in advance or on arrival???? As i need to take the permits

Previously when i visited darjeeling (very long back around 8 years) i didn't get an opportunity to visit sikkim....

If you could help me with the contact details of some travel agent...

When i was surfing the net for some details i could see that the yumthang and gurudongmar package were costed at 4000 to 5000...

Please help me out in this......

When i went to Sikkim last year, it was an instantaneous decision, which nearly cost me my job. I just landed there and started exploring. Within a day, i got to know that getting a permit for Changu or nathula Pass or yumthang was nuthing but a piece of cake. But make sure u carry your DL with you. Fortunately for me, I bumped into a nice local guy called Prem Lama, who agreed to drive me around Gangtok, and also arrange for the Yumthang trip. You just need to fill a form in the evening, and hand it over to a tour operator, who'll get the required permission from the army by next morning.

Don't worry too much about booking a package to Yumthang or Gurudongmar in advance because you are going in the second week of November, and it's going to be nearing the end of season. However, if it makes you comfortable to book in advance, I can share some tel. # with you.

Contact this guy called Prem Lama, who runs a Treks & Travels thing, right next to the main Bus Stand in gangtok. It's called PAKHRING Travels, Tours & Treks. His Office # is 203391/227982. His mobile # is 9733059017. Ask him if he remembers three guys from Bangalore last November.

And don't get perturbed by the prices u see online about Sikkim or Yumthang or any other place. Most of these websites cater to Foreign tourists and hence, the prices that they quote. Check sikkiminfo.net. It's a one-stop website for all u need to know about Sikkim.

I stayed at a modest hotel called Nathan Lodge, right next to the bus stand, on Church Road. The food was very bad there but the hot water from the geyser was absolutely unbeatable. The owner's of this hotel's a guy called Mintu Saba. Here are the Numbers: 03592 229962; 228241; 9434117363; 9832043133; 9832033113.

If you are wondering how I'm belting out all these details, I have their visiting cards.
Before leaving for Sikkim, I also spoke to three or four East-Indian looking Security guards here in bangalore. That helped too.

Lemme know if u need anything else.

Sorry for piggy-backing your post Kumar, but I too am also planning a late Nov trip to Sikkim. Follow on with the cost question: do you think it's possible to get a 'local' price for a fegengi (excuse spelling) since it's end of the season? Also I read that you need to get a 'special permit' if you want to head up North Sikkim 3 MONTHS in advance (from Rough Guide) - can anyone clarify this? One more thing: would a gortex jacket be a sufficient outer layer for trekking only - or would you recommend something more 'sturdy' like Northface puffer jacket?

Thank you forr help!

I'm not very sure about permits for foreign travellers. Lemme inquire and ask around. Will keep you posted

Hi Kumar

I took the 5.30 pm Air Deccan from Bangalore to Kolkatta. Was in Kol by 8.30ish. Headed straight for Sealdah Station, from where all trains from Kol towards Eastern part of India go. My train departed around 10.30 in d night. So, i had a good 2 hours to get to the station, eat some delicious roadside chat and sweets and take in the Durga Puja preparations which were on in full swing.
