singshore & other west sikkim suspension bridges?

i'm trying to identify several suspension bridges in west sikkim about which i've read or of which i've seen photos. i'm primarily trying to determine which ones might be reasonably accessible from yuksom or pelling.

i see, for example, that singshore bridge is described as "25km from pelling and 5km from dentam, towards uttarey. on my map - which is large and fairly detailed - a town of "utare." presumably, this is the same town. however, it looks quite some distance on an unpaved road. has anyone visited the bridge who can tell me more precisely how to reach it and, probably more important, whether it's even worth trying?

there's allegedly a suspension bridge (maybe others?) on the dzongri trail. however, i'm not trekking, so unless one would reach it fairly early out of yuksom, i'd have to miss that one.

i've also read that there's a suspension bridge that crosses "sri khola", but have no earthly idea where that is.

needless to say, i'm keen on suspension bridges in natural settings, so any information about those worth seeing that i stand a chance of reaching would be most appreciated. at present, my plans call for one night in yuksom after leaving gangtok, and then two nights in pelling before going on to darjeeling.

thanks.

well, M, let's first see whether i survive the helicopter ride; the high-altitude yak ride; and quaalude-overdose-like chaams; the possibility of electrical outages rendering my cochear implant useless; the suddenly crash-prone toy train; the fall from elephant back ("and then there were...three!"); and my flirtation with aerial danger at the singsore suspension bridge. (should i ever find it.)

N, it's embarrassingly true. too many interests, too little time...

You could try looking for Chaksam , a Tibetan word for suspension (literally iron) bridge on your map. (Skydiving would read something like this in Tibetan , but please don´t )

thanks for the 'chaksam' tip. (and i thought for sure that somnath would have jumped in here by now.)

not to worry, my skydiving (but not SCUBA-diving!) days passed along with my youthful sense of immortality - and a few broken bones. eventually, however, i'll have to concede that i'm neither an aquatic NOR an avian species, and go gently into the eve of my homo sapien maturity... in any case, rest assured my feet will stay firmly planted on any suspension bridge i may find...

Thumbs up

Srikhola (http://images.google.co.in/images?q=...a=N&fi lter=0 ) is situated in the trek rout between Sandakphu and Rimbik. But you are not going to trek there. But it is really a small bridge. Singshore is really huge.
The best way to visit Singshore is from Pelling. Actually, this is covered in Pelling local tour. Talk to your hotel manager to arrange a shared jeep to visit local attractions (or arrange it from the jeep stand) and rest assured Singshore bridge will be there in the list.
And you are right, you need to cross Dentam valley to visit Singshore. Plz don’t forget to stop at Dentam for a sec. and click some photographs there – step cultivation is nothing new in Himalayas but Dentam valley is unique.

There are about 4-5 on the first day of the Dzongri trail, probabley the most impressive one(infront of a large waterfall) is less than an hour down the path.

Thought that you are going to do Bungee Jumping.... that's the immediate picture which came to my mind after reading "suspension bridges", "adventure" and "aerial danger".

Alas, the bungee jumping shall not come to pass....

What's that poem about wearing a red hat when old (or was it a bag, coat, or something?)

Sounds like it might be your anthem, Janice

And, if by 'suspension bridge' you mean those bits of rope with the occasional bit of wood swinging about in the air --- that is my nightmare!

It's only my nightmare if I think of myself trying to cross one ... oh, that's what you're talking about?

I've been wracking my brain to try to remember where I recently saw a picture of really horrifying ... er ... "exciting" one somewhere in Sikkim. I think it was somewhere on this site, but as I'm getting completely senile, I'm not sure. I'll keep looking ...
