Sikkim Via Bagdogra in January'08

Hello all, my first post on India Mike. We will be a group of six including my parents travelling to Sikkim in January 2008. We are flying into Bagdorga with Air Deccan at 09:30 in the morning. Does anyone know how fog affects this airport and what chances are for cancellation of the flight? Also any suggestions on decent mid range hotels in Gangtok. I have a few in mind, Hotel NewCAstle (little over the budget), Hotel Delamere, Mintokling Guest House, and The Oriental. But other names are welcome. Is it worth visiting Pelling for overnight trip from Gangtok? Also planning to stay overnight in Mirik at the Orange Country Retreat but what is the best way to book them? Thanks

You should devote a couple of days to Pelling - to see the historic monasteries, have views of Kuchenunga (sp?)and maybe visit Tashiding or Lake Ketcheperi. However an afternoon will let you see the monasteries, and weather permitting the tall peaks.

Thanks Arun and Brisso, Mintokling sounds good. But now I quite want to go to Pelling too. Thinking of the following trip. Bagdorga - Pelling (2nts) - Gangtok (1nt) - Mirik (1nt) - NJP. Is that a practical order or Gangtok first and then Pelling? Anybody stayed in Tashi Gang or Bliss Resort in Pelling?

You can do that in any order. Bagdogra-Pelling-Gangtok or Bagdogra-Gangtok-Pelling.
The Sikkim tourism's hotel in Pelling is located in a very nice spot. The view of Kanchenjungha from this hotel is great.
See if you can fit in Raibangla too. The views from Raibangla is real awsome.

Have booked Tashi Gang Resort near Gaeysing for two nights and Tashi Gang Hotel in Yuksom for one night and then coming and staying in Snagrila Regency in Darjeeling for one night. Now the problem is when we applied for our Indian Visa we were not given the innerline permit. Is there any counter issuing it in Bagdorga Airport or can it be obtained at Jorethang or Melli Bazar crossing?

Hi! there,
I’am glad that you are making a trip to Sikkim… I’am sure u’ll enjoy it. Ok firstly don’t worry about the inner permit u’ll get that in Siliguri, that’s where Bagdogra airport is. Check this link for further info on the same http://www.sikkiminfo.net/travel_guide.htm . Tashi Gang Resort I hear is good… have not been there myself but have see the location…. So I guess no prob there. Just ensure you calculate enough time at Siliguri to get your inner permit done. What time are you landing? You’ll have to drive 3-4 hrs to reach Pelling from Siliguri. Hey I am glad that you are going to Jorthang…. Not too many people go there. When u are at Jorthang see if you can visit Chakung (45 mins from Jorething) it is a charming & beautiful village. U get a 306 degree view of the surrounding hills from there.

Have a lovely trip and let me know if I can help with more.

Regards,

Hi,

My suggestion would be to look at Bagdogra-Pelling-Gangtok . It will take about 4-5 hours by road. We stayed in Norbu Gang in Pelling and Hidden forest Retreat in gangtok..its slightly away from the city, but beautiful

You can see my blog and my sikkim post for details

Hi,
You will get that at Bagdogra , at the airport . I have not stayed at Tashi Gang but at Norbu Gang in Pelling. It takes about 4-5 hours from Bagdogra by road and it gets dark very quickly ..so pls factor in that .Yuksom and pelling are very beautiful and if you need any help, pls let me know. You can also read my post on Sikkim in my blog for any info

How cold in Gangtok in January?

I've thought about going from Darjeeling area to Gangtok in mid-January, but now I'm wondering about the cold. What are the day and night temperatures? How much snow?

At that time of year, would climate conditions in eastern Nepal (and even as far as Kathmandu) be similar to southern Sikkim? I'm not planning to go on a trek, just thinking of spending a few days at the lower elevations.
