Hi all,

I am not as adventurous as I might sound here, but here's my question anyway.

Can you please provide your frank opinion on my idea of a bike trip with wife and 5 year old son for 9 days in sikkim? I am planning to rent a 350cc thunderbird in silliguri. I am planning to do trip very liesurly and don't want to rush though places, even if that means extra halts in between.

Thanks for your frank opinion in advance.

Vishnu

Should be doable depending on which places you want to visit.

Thanks 8thfrog, is North sikkim possible (upto gurudongmar lake?). My plan is to once I have made my mind to rent bike, go to places as suggested by locals (or forums).

Which is why I am also not planning to make hotel reservations in advance. How difficult would it be to book hotels along the way?

Please do check the situation in Darjeeling. It might impact your reaching Sikkim.

I am going to avoid Darjeeling, I just want to enjoy sikkim part.

I don't think I need to worry about situation in darjeeling as it's not on my route to gangtok. I already spoke to few travel agents, and they assured me things are fine in sikkim.

Thanks for your concen though.

You chose the toughest route my friend!

Upto Lachen and Lachung, the road is pretty okay and you should be good if you do not choose to travel during rainy season as these roads are prone to landslides.

However the drive from Lachen to Gurudongmar (~60 km) is pretty broken and rough for bikes. Also, the altitude that you gain from Lachen to Gurudongmar is an astounding 9000 ft. And, this height gain is done within a period of 4-5 hrs. Also, to visit Gurudongmar, you have to start at 3-4 am from Lachen in order to reach the destination on time (locals say that after 11 am Gurudongmar becomes very very windy). This means a good portion of your ride will be while its still dark. And, you get no chance to acclimatize before reaching such high altitude.

Now, if you are a seasoned rider and have visited high altitudes in the past and want the ultimate adventure, these things wont matter much as some people do visit the lake on bike. But if your not, then think twice about covering this stretch on a bike with your lady and little one.

It might seem that i am trying to deter you, but i just laid down the facts before you, choice is yours.

And yes, do not worry about hotels. You can get the booking done from Gangtok easily. There are plenty hotels at Lachen/Lachung and they never run houseful.

This is the exact kind of frank opinion I was looking for, so thanks a lot.

I will keep gurudongmar lake off the list at this point, and will decide as and when required.

I doubt I want to do it with my kid, so thanks for the heads up.

Anyway, in case the roads to sikkim are closed, what are my options? shall I cancel my trip (and flights) altogether?

You need to get biking permit for North Sikkim from Sikkim Home Deptt in Gangtok( Manan Bhawan ) & most probably they will not allow you to ride to Gurudongmar with a kid . You may get in touch with them or any Gangtok based travel agency to know if this is permissible or not.
