Thumbs up Try to get away from the cities

Dear Amit,
Congratulation first. After going through this thread I found that you need a peaceful honeymoon place far from crowds. As told you may not cover many places in North Sikkim due to snowfalls. The same thing is also applicable for Tawang as you have to cross Sela pass ( highest pass in Eastern Himalaya). And Shimla Manali is far different in character to Eastern Himlayas. I think you are aware of that and I apreciate your views. There are beautiful yet secluded and safe places in Sikkim and Darjeeling apart from Gangtok. To name a few Pelling, Rabongla, Aritar (Lampokhri lake), Pedong, Rishop, Charkhole, Deolo, Yangtey, Borong, Barsey, Kaluk, Rinchenpong, Biksthang or some luxurious tea bungalows in many places in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri district . I can bet these places are as beautiful as any part of Himalayas. Hope that from Mumbai you wont prefer to go to other cities like Shimla, Gangtok or Darjeeling. Hope for the best.

@roj.roy,

Thank You ! The pointers you gave here caught might interest as I am considering Sikkim for honeymoon too in late Jan/Feb. You threw up quite a few locations which I had never heard of after extensively browsing these forums.. Can you give some pointers on "some luxurious tea bungalows in many places in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri district " ? links or even specific name s of these bungalows would help...

roj, for tawang, there is a helicopter service from guwahati, so you don't have to travel through the Sela pass.
moreover, for honeymoon it would be a unique experience helicopter travel as well. but it would cost around 3000rs one way per person.
But everybody has his or her own idea of travelling and enjoying hence it definitely is an option for amit.

Zurran tea estate

Hi,
I have seen a 19th century tea bungalow in Dooars. Near Gorumara. The name is Zurran tea estate. It is fantastic for honeymooners though a bit costly. I do not know whether it has a website. But I know a travel agency there who makes packages with this.

Hi Amit Mishr,
Thanx for giving me the information of the helicopter service to Tawang. Can you give me the detail information. There is also a helicopter service from Bagdogra to Gangtok and back but it is difficult to avail as there is only 5 seats for the entire day. Is the same thing is applicable there?

Hi Amit first congratulation for your Marriage Life. You are going to such place which are very cold and will be covered with snow in mid december...First of all I would suggest something..
You are from Mumbai nd you are going to gangtak in a package tour. Its worth 22k . right? but it is little high for your 8-10 days itineary.Beacause....
1)In december your Gurudongra nd yamthang tour may be cancelled due to heavy snowfall and close road.
2)Lachen and Lachung are two last remote villages for those excursion where you have to stay at night. These two village are very small,I had hardly found hotels, resturants, market and even villagers. These two are army protected & based area. There nothing have plenty hotels and luxary are hard to imagine.
3) Those two excursion may be arranged after reaching gangtak, which may cost hardly 800/900 per person for 2D/1N journey in peak seson, while you are going in off sesaon. You would have options to arrange this after watching weather condition though in december those very tough.
4)Your gangtak site seing and "bab mandir with nathula" tour may be arranged at Rs.700/800 for a Maruti Van for whole day.
5) Aware about nathula pass,as this are close in monday/tuesday probably.I'm not sure the day....pls confirm...
6)Most of the local people are very simple and honest,You can bargain anything like for vechile, hotels, marketing etc....I had ph no.of a Mahindra Max driver whose name was "krishna" but lost the numbers. You can search this name at gangtak taxi stand for north sikkim.
Anyway best of luck...may be I be there in jan 2010.Gd Eve.

I see, you're on a honeymoon trip but don't you think 45K for 10days tour is too much ? I'm going to Sikkim on 28th Oct and I will let you know the details after 7th Nov. I will agree with Manas.

Anyways, have you thought about Bhutan ? I think in December, you'll experience snowfalls. There are nice places too like Thimpu / Paro / Wangdue / Punakha / Bumthang / Trongsa / Mongar / Trashigang. It will be perfect for your honeymoon trip.

Hi there, admittedly I've not done enough research on Sikkim. Just toying with the idea last night. I'm planning to go possibly from Calcutta on 23rd Dec to 2nd Jan. I'm interested to see some chaam dances. I read somewhere that there's Loosang (new year) or similar around that time. Anyone know where? as in which monastry / town.

Also how cold will it be - I come from the tropics - Malaysia.

Thanks all.

Amit,

45 K for 10 N / 11 D is almost a rip off.

Did you check with multiple operators...Also, check out with Sonam Palgey. We had used their services a couple of years ago and they were good.

Try asking for individual quotes ie.,. acco, food and travel and you will find that there is atleast a 50 % excess on your package.

And remember you are not going there in peak season.

Thanks guys for your suggestions,

Instead of taking package tour am drafting my own itinerary. When contacted hotels directly they are offering 20-30% discount and overall costing of my tour is coming down by 20-30% as compared to package tour offered by tour operators.

I've slected following locations for my relaxing honeymoon tour -
Pelling - Hotel chiminda international - 3 days
Ravangla - Mt Narsing Resort - 4 days
Gangtok - Hotel Golden Height/ Sonam delek - 3 days

can anyone share their experience about these places/hotels to help me finalize my itinerary.

Thanks...
Amit.
