oh dear

You dont need any book to travel to sikkim....!!!
india mike is itself a open book for you....ha ha ha !
Well offcourse Lonely planet india is the best. This book is always followed by most overseas trourists.

I would say, just go to the Sikkim tourism office in M.G.Marg and get some tips on sight seeing in Gangtok. Then can just advise you. But you have to book your local trip vide local tour operators. I would say dont go for 10 point local sight seeing. Its worthless. try 7 point. that will worth.
I have the contact no. the person of Norling tours and travels in gangtok. But for local sight seeing try local taxi operator in M.G.Marg. try bargaining coz its offseason in winter months.
we had to pay 1000/- in oct2005 (peak season) for 7 point including Rumtek monastry.

Happy Hunting

yep,
Its,
1.Rumtek (A Must Must See)
2.Indian Institute of Tibetology (Must Must See)
3.Directorate of Handicrafts (Must Must See)
4.Ganesh Tok (Temple, you get a birds eye view of Gangtok)
5.Hanuman Tok ( Temple )
6.Tashi View point (ok)
7.Botanical Garden (ok)

Try to alternate Ganesh Tok with Enche Monastry (if possible) coz i heard a mask dance is held in Jan.

Good Luck

Could you please let out details of the costs of your trip. We are planning a 4night 5 day trip for a couple to Gangtok/Pelling - from Bagdogra, in late April

hi mishra,

Welcome to indiamike.
The time for your visit is the peak time for tourism. So always you are going to spend more on everything. i think 4 - 4.5 INR Per Head will do if you plan an average trip and not exclusive trip.

Good Luck

we paid Rs 700 per person for a 2D 1 N trip to yumthang via lachung(lodging n food included). It was a shared vehicle. We contacted Marco polo as well and they said it would be 9700 for the entire vehicle, but it was just me and my husband so we opted for a more economical option of a shared trip. Marco polo however is the costliest option there.
Please do not pre book, coz once reaching there you would realise there are cheaper options too...

its 4 to Rs.4,500.00. its good not to book your trip until you reach there. The best way is to go personally and book the Trip. There are many Travel Agencies out there. We had to spend 900 per head for 2days 1night package tour to Lachung. And had to cough up Rs.150.00 perhead for going to Zero Point (Yumesandang) the last point where the road ends and mountains everywhere.
And it was in May with biting cold at Zero point (16000ft).

I spoke to a tour operator and he quote 1200 Rs (one person shared vehicle) for 2D/1N - Yumthang-Lachung. So I guess, this is the price range.
