hi, I've a long list of questions......
can you tell me if its possible to hire warm clothes in sikkim - esp jacket and sleeping bag?? Will be arriving in early march and not sure of the weather. If you know the places and prices of clothing hire please let me know. is it busy in march? Do you recommend reserving a hotel room? what is the best way to get around? If no trekking is 10 days enough? Is a permit easy to get from darjeeling? Can you recomend a nice itineray for a solo traveller - meeting travellers would be good. much appreciated! Thanks..... |

Hi Cathy, I'll try and answer some of your questions, but there are others here (Somnath for a start) who have much more experience of this loely state.
If you are not trekking, you should not need a sleeping bag. Many hotels provide additional heating and "hot-bags" (hot water bottles) when it's cold. Come March it shouldn't be too bad though - we were there in early January and didn't find the cold any worse than at home (Scotland), even up at Pelling. However, I believe you can hire such items in Gangtok and Darjeeling, though I couldn't be specific. The easiest way to get around is by shared jeep (the roads do not accommodate conventional buses). Gangtok and Darjeeling have prominent "bus stations" where you could find these. Ask around for destinations and prices. If you are not trekking, 10 days should be enough to see the major attractions in Gangtok, Pelling, Yuksam and one or other of the famous lakes. You can obtain your permit at the border, not sure you can get one in Darjeeling. You will meet other travellers everywhere - Gangtok especially - we found it to be a very friendly and amenable place anyway. Hope you enjoy - it's a fabulous state - if I believed in heaven it would look like Sikkim. Don't miss Rumtek or Pemayangtse (Pelling) monestaries or the museum of Tibetology in Gangtok. Try to get a window seat in the jeeps so you can enjoy to views while travelling.
