Sikkim october - walking not trekking

We're going to be in Sikkim for a couple of weeks in October at the start of a 7 month trip. Can anyone suggest a tour company that would take us into North Sikkim so we can do a mix of walks (as opposed to treks - we won't have our proper walking boots with us), with homestays and jeep style touring.
Have been trawing the net for weeks and can only find companies seem to only offer treks or a jeep tour. Our aim is to get a good feel for the culture, nature, (fauna and flora) and people in Sikkim.
Thanks.

I was considering doing that last year but opted for the Dzongri trek partly because I couldnt find many companies that offered indepth tours of the north. The problem is I'd guess that you have to hire the driver/jeep by the day(unlike more populated areas where he can find a return fare) so using it every day provides a better price to advertise.

I remember seeing quite a few tour companies offering trips to the north in Gangtok itself, mostly whistlestop ones but I'd guess you could negotiate something longer at a slower pace.

Can't think of any organization names per se, but I remember seeing plenty of tour operators offering monastery tours and things like that. I am sure those people would be able to customize to suit your needs.

If nothing works, just reach Gangtok and bang the door of a tour operator. They are usually flexible.

You may not prebook any operator, I did and got a bad deal. I met travellers who paid much less for the same trip that I had taken. Reach Gangtok and discuss your plans with a couple of operators. Compare prices, check the accomodation offered and do check the condition of the vehicle.

Hi my husband and I went to Sikkim 10 years ago and organised our own trip. Walked the Singalia Ridge ith a 7 yr old. We hired a pony for her. Then we went for a few days with the following www.gurudongma.com and had an amazing time. I Highly recommend them and the info to be gleaned from The General makes it even more memorable.

Hi

We were in Sikkim feb/mar this year, travelling by share jeep.

In Tashiding we met a guide with his german client, certainly we were not staying in smart hotels............. dont exist there , its basic , and then awful,

The german could not do his trek bescause of the heavy snows.

The guide was very helpful for travel info for us.

Next we met them in Pelling and I got his card.

THIS IS NOT AN ADVERT FOR HIS SERVICES. We did not use him at all

However as you want a contact, [at mods discretion]

Seems like the consensus is to wait till I get to Gantok and check a few places out. I'm in Goa now, and will be heading out in a couple of weeks. Can't wait! Thanks for all your advice.
