Sikkim in September 1 week
Hi everyone,
I am planning to land at Gangtok and spend a week traveling to the north with my base at Mangan and gangtok. I havent booked anything anywhere but plan to do this rough and tough. I will be at Sikkim from Sep 6th to 12th and then return back to south India. I hope to also visit zero point to see snow. I am a single girl who is venturing out for this trip. Gangtok to Mangan, Mangan to Lanchen and then from there I want to see all the places. Is this a good idea? I dont want to book as its so costly through the net. I thought I would land at Gangtok and then discuss rates for the hotel, travel to the north by bus. Please give me some good points as I am traveling with a low budget and tell me if this is a good idea. Thanks. Sharon I can be reached at 98842 84578 if anyone is in the town when I am there and would like to hook up to do stuff together. |

why arent they any replies
(( I need some help.....My main worry is to get to hot springs, snow, as far as from people and then just enjoy my time. What place do I head out too? A not so cheap but comfortable place right up north? Thanks I havent booked any hotels up north of sikkim. I prefer to go there and then bargain and then reserve rooms. Is that fine? 1 week for this trip. Last edited by theyyamdancer : Aug 14th, 2009 at 22:40. Reason: consecutive posts |

Hello, if you read around the Sikkim forum a little bit you will understand more about how to travel to the North of Sikkim. There is a wealth of information at your disposal!
(Don't forget it is a holiday weekend this weekend. )Moderator Note: I have merged your consecutive posts above. There is no need to write a new reply for each thought. Thanks.

http://www.freerider.in/wiki/?cmd=Di...for_foreigners can give you a decent heads up.
Kindly note that foreigners are not normally allowed beyond Mangan (?) - which is a crying shame. Please check before you book

From Gangtok to Mangan and Singhik will be very wet as monsoon will still be active.. if you are able to get beyond Thangu and go up to Gurdongmar and the North Sikkim plateau you should get good views.. Singhik has an exceptional view of Kangchendzonga but I wonder whether it will be clear in Sept

I will give my two cents since I have worked in Lachen for quite some time. Firstly it would be quite challenging and frustrating to travel by public transport in North Sikkim. There are no buses going to Lachen or Lachung, there is only one bus which goes from Gantok to Mangan. The best option would be to go to the North Sikkim taxi stand near Vajra theatre and take a shared jeep to Mangan. From Mangan you will have to take another shared jeep either to Lachen or to Lachung. The frequency of the jeeps from Mangan is not all that great so you could have a hard time getting a shared jeep. Try out this option only if you have enough time on your hand.
Also if you want to go to Lachen or Lachung you will need to obtain an inner line permit. You can get that from the DC office at Mangan itself, but it might take a day so be prepared to stay over at Mangan. If you are going in September there is no need to make any bookings since it is off season. But it would also be raining quite a bit at that time and you will get landslide on certain routes. Nonetheless it would be quite pretty as Lachen - Lachung valleys would be carpeted with flowers. |
