I finally managed to visit Gurudongmar lake .. (with all the permit requirements and the landslides).
I did not take a shared taxi and will NOT suggest one to Gurudongmar.
Yes it is much cheaper than an exclusive vehicle, but you may not enjoy the trip as much.
The reason is that the tour operators take at least 9 - 10 people in one cab (Mahindra Maxx, the preferred vehicle there, has a capacity of 10-11 people + Driver). This may be an ok arrangement for a 2 hour drive in plains, but it may not actually be that comfortable for a 16 hour drive (at least) to Gurudongmar (for a round trip). The roads in North Sikkim are really bad and even the big car shakes violently on every broken stretch of the road.

Besides, as histeve said in his thread, in the trip to Gurudongmar Lake, the journey is as important as the destination. Start from Lachen early morning and you'll come across scenery that will take your breath away. You have to have the flexibility of stopping anywhere to drink in this beauty.

Also shared taxis ply only when there are enough people for one car.

I disagree with X. Shared taxis leave even when it's not totally full. In our taxi we were just five of us and my friend who went this April had six of them in shared taxi. They were charged 2700 Rs per person. Service depends on which tour agent one selects. Galaxy Tours and Travels has really good service in Gangtok for Sikkim trips. We had great fun with our shared passengers. Book in advance and make sure that you book front seat. That way one can enjoy more. If you are right in the back that the journey could be tiring. If one can afford to shell out 15000 or have groupo of five or more than private taxi is always preferable. Their contact details are :

Galaxy Tours and Treks
Metro Point, Gangtok,
Sikkim - 737 101, India
Phone: 91-3592-222 4692, 222 5600
Mail: galaxytravels@rediffmail.com
Charge is aprox. 2500 Rs per person which included lodging and food. Itinerary is :

GANGTOK TO LACHEN
LACHEN TO GURUDONGMAR TO LACHUNG
LACHUNG TO YUMTHANG TO GANGTOK

Rushir
