Northeast India in September 2006

Hi,

I don't want to hijack the "Sikim in May" thread nor do I want to spam (I have posted a similar message in the Andhra Pradesh sub forum because I thought Sikim was in Andhra Pradesh lol!).. but I'll spending some time in the north east region of india (ie. Sikim, Darjeeling, etc), mid to late september. Some people on the forum have advised me that the weather would be v miserable around there - that it'd be constantly raining - but I'd guess it would be better in some places that others.

Calcutta will be my hub (where I'll be leaving from and returning to). So, all things considered, can you suggest an itinerary for my 8 days in this region? I should add, I'd really love to find out about Buddist culture.

Many thanks.

If u r interested in Buddhist culture u can spend time at the following places:
Darjeeling-Dali,Ghoom and other monasteries+Tibetan Refugee centre.
Gangtok-Rumtek,Enchey monasteries and other smaller ones.
Pelling-Pemyangtse.
It will be raining no doubt but rain in hilly region has its own beauty. But yes ,u won't be able to visit places that are normally visited in dry period.
Also problem of landslide will be there.

Yes, you may find it hard to get to Pelling/Pemayangtse - the road up there is pretty poor even in good conditions.

Getting to Gangtok should not be a problem and there are some fantastic moasteries there as well as the museum of Tibetology up at Enchey Gompa. Do not miss Rumtek - I think it has the most beautiful interior of any gompa I've seen.

In hilly region landslide during rainy season is a common thing.
The frequency and seriousness depends on the weather condition.
We were on the North Sikkim highway last winter-reached a place where there was a fresh landslide, probably not more than a few hours ago.Bulldozers were busy settling the mess.
Our driver managed to negotiate the stretch in about 20 mins. But the condition of the road was aweful-it seemed that we were riding a tank.
If u choose to stay in gangtok then Rumtek is really wonderful, also the early morning at Enchey. The institute of tibetology will also fascinate u.
