NJP to Yuksom
Hi guys,
Me and my friends are planning GoechaLa trek in May. We would like to know travel options to get to Yuksom from NJP. We'll be arriving at NJP either in early morning or late evening (say 8pm), coming from Calcutta by train. Our motive is to get to Yuksom in the least possible time. Now my questions 1. Whats the means to get to Yuksom from NJP? I guess there are shared jeeps available? 2. How far and how long does it take? Can it be done in a day? 3. If we arrive at JNP in the evening (7-8pm) are there any late night services to get to Yuksom or do we have to wait till the morning? 4. If we cant get to Yuksom the same day, is it better to stay at NJP or travel as far as possible? Any intermediate places to spend the night on way to Yuksom? Thanks in advance for any kind of info. |

When you disembark, there will be 20 taxi drivers offering their relatively seen expensive services. Perhaps you should go for the shared jeep stand to look for a Gangtok possibility. Try guide books for locating it. You might even be lucky to find a Yuksom jeep; I never looked for them.
In Gangtok, there are umpteen agents offering treks. Unlike in Darjiling, they have limited possibilites for renting jackets, sleeping bags and the like. Don't go for the first "obvious" choice, however "Gov't approved" or mentioned in guide books, but shop around. Not all of them deliver what they offer regarding food etc. |

Thanks for the info Lugubert.
We'll carry our own sleeping bags and tent. Will most probably get guides and porters from Yuksom. However we need info on getting to Yuksom. |

Hi, I was in Sikkim last week and we went to Pelling that is quite close to Yuksom. We also plan to do the same trek in April if we can work out the leaves.
In my opinion this is how I will try getting to Yuksom. When you get down at NJP you get shared jeeps to Gangtok but not for Pelling. However, if you go to Siliguri (8km) either by cycle rickshaw or by walking around and looking for a temo you will get many shared jeeps to Pelling. From Pelling Yuksom is 70-80 Kilometers. I really do not know if there are jeeps straight for Yuksom from Siliguri. If you reach during the day the entire journey is possible in a day even if you break it at Pelling. In late evenings they avoid driving in the hills. We paid Rs. 300 per seat for Siliguri to Pelling. Hope this helps. |
