Lake Gurudongmar banned ???

Hello,
The guide we are going to trek the Gocha La in Sikkim in October, says the following about Gurudongmar Lake:

"Really y sorry to let you know that Gurudongmar lake is been band for the western tourist you can drive up to the place called Thangu only and then you can walk up to chopta valley.Even we being a local people from sikkim need a permit to visit north Sikkim and also Gurudongmar. So there is no possibilities of visiting Gurudongmar in Norht Sikkim."

Any ideas or alternatives?

What he said is quite true. Foreigners are only allowed to go upto Thangu, I know that it' a stupid thing but this being the border region and there being a continous threat from China, the army has strict rules.

But the area around LAchen and Thangu is very beautiful and you can easily spend 3 days over there . I am currently volunettring in Lachen through a NGO and am doing quite a bit of exploration around the area. If you want more details then mail me and I would be more then glad to help.
