Internet 'cafes' in Sikkim

How easy is it to find internet access in Sikkim? I'm thinking mainly of Gangtok and Pelling.

What opening hours do internet places tend to keep? My guidebook implies that they're likely to shut by 8pm, which given the time difference between India and home, would be a bit inconvenient for me.

Thanks

In Gangtok there are several cafes on MG Road (i used one called logon.com) and also one on Lal Market Raod. They were pretty fast/ok then .... maybe now even Broadband. Not sure of late hours ...(may not be beyond 9PM as some are run/operated by women). Pelling? dont know. ... KS

yes 8 pm is the time that everything shuts down in Gangtok...even to find food after that time is a challenge..only couple of places are open on MG road and you have wait for a very long time before they can serve...

this was my experience as well in gangtok (8 pm closings). frustrating if you want to spend your days sight-seeing, rather than sitting in front of monitor. and when i did have the ever-elusive nexus of time-desire-and opportunity, there always seemed to be a problem warranting 15 minutes of tech intervention by the staff, who it might take 10 minutes for them just to find. this was a year ago. things may be better now, as far as connection speeds and equipment reliability.

in pelling, i had computer "access" at my hotel (norbu ghang "resort"). however, there were also so many tech/speed problems there that it was just an exercise in frustration.

again, things may be better now and it wasn't as if i scoured the local landscape looking for a connection. but i'd also arrived with very low expectations about getting connected and, for that matter, was glad to be out of perennial virtual contact.

if you do need to be in touch back home, i'd suggest arriving with a list of possible places (from your guidebook) in hand and then checking it with people at your hotel. that way, you'll save time wandering around trying to locate places.

good luck--and have a great trip!
