Fixed up...
Just wanted y'all to know... and to say thanks for all the help... have booked stay at Yangri Gang at Yuksom and at Rabdentse Residency at Pelling. Both Mr Bhutia, manager at the former, and Mr. Mukherjee, owner of the latter, seem rather nice on the phone, so I'm fairly certain things will pan out. Will put in reviews in the hotels section once I'm back!
