Hotels in Gangtok?

We would be heading to Sikkim in the last week of December. I know Gangtok is full of hotels but can anyone suggest a good budget hotel? Do they have any provision of heating because in December I guess we will need it.

Sanjay, thanks a lot for your reply but it is not budget for me. This is three star! I would not like to spend more than 500/- per night.

Thumbs up Hi Mridula,

We used to stay at Hotel Tibet or Tashi De Lek (not a budget hotel but who cares office was going to pay the bills ). Once we went to Hotel Swagat at Tibet Road (pocket was empty after a long trip to Guwahati + Shillong), just beside a Thai Restaurant but cant recommend this to a tourist. Mridula, you can go to M. G. Road (upper side) around Star Cinema Hall and UTI Bank / Hotel Tashi De Lek for good hotels. Sorry cant remember the names.
Darjeeling and Sikkim is a bit crowded around 25th Dec – 1st Jan but you;ll get good discount there.

We're going to Sikkim Dec. 19-24. Crowded then too? Is there any need to book hotels in advance--either in Gangtok or Pelling or anyplace else?

Thanks a lot for all your suggestions. We definitely are not booking hotels in advance and I hope this would not be a cause of concern? Going by our past experiences to places in India I hope it should not be but I thought I will ask just to be doubly sure.

Somnath, any suggestions on what should we do once we reach there?

Thumbs up

Hi,
Don’t worry, crowded means not that you are going to face a big trouble. Generally what happens, all the good rooms in good hotels are booked and the chance of negotiation is minimum.
Zeppy and Mridula both of you can try hotels around M. G. Road area at Gangtok and Upper Pelling.

Buggybones, thank you so much. It is really good to see our new friends are also contributing and sharing useful information with all. this link will definitely help Mridula and Zeppy to select their hotels.

Cheers,
Somnath

We just came home from Gangtok and it is really not busy there right now - you should have no trouble getting hotels.

We stayed at the Hotel Superview at the top end of the city - near Zero point.
The rooms were clean, about 475rs per night for double and the service was great. The food at the hotel was fantastic and we were able to organize all of our sightseeing and our trek through the tour company that was there - fabulous!
The phone # is 204643 for the hotel and for sightseeing/trekking Bhusan is fantastic and at the same place!

for what it's worth...

...i just made a reservation at the tibet hotel for february, after getting suggestions/reviews here and elsewhere. their restaurant is reputed to be very good as well. obviously i don't yet have any first hand experience at the place, but they were immediately responsive by email and very helpful - even gave me a 30% off-season discount after i inquired. and when i asked if they needed credit card info to confirm, they said that if my visit was "serious" it wasn't necessary. the honor system, i guess. as i'm honorable, i like that.

yes, the "honor system" does work in a lot of places in India but not quite in a cut throat environment by which I mean, during the peak season. During the time that you plan to travel to Sikkim [Feb, i believe], you will be able to walk into any hotel there and find a room for yourself. The hotel owners know that they WILL HAVE rooms in Feb - GUARANTEED. just thought that you should not always trust the "honor system" and be prepared for a few "shocks" as well.

As they say, "the things that you hear about India are true but the opposite is true as well"!
