My wife and I are planning to honeymoon in Gangtok and Darjeeling in mid April. We plan on staying at the Mayfair Hotels in Gangtok (4 nights) and in Darjeeling (4 nights). We prefer a nice leisurely trip with very little adventure. Currently we plan on flying out of Mumbai and getting to Bagdogra via Kolkata. This is where we are having trouble planning our trip. Would you guys recommend any hotels over the Mayfairs hotels?

We have heard the helicopter ride from Bagdogra to Gangtok is very beautiful and and only takes 30 minutes so we were hoping to do that but couldn't find any reviews about it. Would you folks recommend those helicopter rides? If so, how do we reserve the helicopters rides? Is there a number we should call?

We planned on exploring Gangtok over the next 4 days and then take the toy train to Darjeeling. We planned a leisurely 4 days in Darjeeling as well. Does this sound good to you guys?

Thanks for reading and appreciate any advice we can get.

I never stayed at Mayfair Hotel, but once I was there to meet someone and seemed to me a nice one.......but its not in Gangtok, its at Ranipool (12km from Gangtok), is the entry gate of Sikkim and its a commercial-industrial area of Sikkim.

Well! I dont even the experience of Bagdogra-Gangtok helicopter service.......in 2010 I booked two seats but canceled due to bad weather.......and it happens sometime......you may book & ask info from here:

or

http://www.sikkimpackages.com/helicopterservice.htm

first link is under Govt of Sikkim

may be you know, there is a 30 minutes Mt. Kanchenjunga joy ride on helicopter from Gangtok........even at the sunrise time......you may try it too.

Code:
We planned on exploring Gangtok over the next 4 days and then take the toy train to Darjeeling.
there is no train to Darjeeling from Gangtok........but you may avail a joy ride Darjeeling-Batasia Loop-Darjeeling.......if like to ride this heritage train, advance booking is recommended

another Sikkim is famous for different species of Rhododendrons & other wild flowers and the time you've chosen to be in Gangtok, they are about to bloom.......and they are found naturally in North/West Sikkim
.

Totaly confused how to explore the beautiful earth when one life is too short to complete my great India

Thanks, PKanti. I didn't know about the Kanchenjunga helicopter trip but I am going to do it. I haven't planned any activities as of yet. Right now, I am just trying to figure out where to live once we get there. I'm going to plan the activities after we settle on the hotel and the dates.

It is too bad that the Mayfair isn't in Gangtok and its a shame that its in an industrial area. For some reason I thought it close to Gangtok and yet somewhat secluded. Are there any 5 star hotels closer to Gangtok than Mayfair? Are there any others you would recommend? I was hoping to walk around and explore the city while not being too far away from the hotel room.

Regarding the toy train, we were planning on getting a taxi to Silliguri and taking the toy train from there. Not really sure if that is worth while.

Once I figure out the hotels, I am going to start working on the activities. I'm going to look into the possibility of heading to the North/West Sikkim area to see the Rhododendrons in bloom. That sounds like a really good idea.

I have always wanted to visit Sikkim and i'm really looking forward to this trip. Thanks again for the advice.

There are no regular trains running south of Kurseong due to a major landslide in June 2010. More details here.

The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.

Well! be frank to you, I never stayed any five star hotel in Gangtok........according to you dream, stay on the Mahatma Gandhi Marg (MG Marg)......its on the heart of Gangtok......on MG Marg, there are lots of different type of hotels..........as you going to make honeymoon in Gangtok, I can understand; hotel going to mean lot of to you.........once I stayed Hotel Golden Pagoda.......I cant remember their star grade, but it may be three or four........you may check it through their website.

April is consider as high season there and as a delicate topurist like you, its strongly advised to book your trip advance.
