Gangtok on Jan 26

Hi All,
I want to celebrate my first wedding anniversary in Gangtok from 26-29 Jan'08. I've few questions, pls care to answer them.
1) - I've heard that weather at these times becomes very cold. What temp. range can I expect there? - what about snowfall?..Are roads open at this time of year? Is it a good idea to visit gangtok at this time?
2) - I've heard that during this time of year "ENCHEY MONASTERY" hold Chaam - mask dances. Does anyone has idea about the exact dates and programs?
3) How should I plan my trip, I'll be reaching there on 26th & leaving on 29th by train from NJP?

Thanks,

hi the weather will be bit cold but 26 jan would not be so cold . you could have good time . the roads shall be perfect and opened it is on monsoon they have big problems .

on you arrival at njp look for vehicles going to gangtok direct if you dont find there get a rickshaw and ask them to reach you to sikkim national transport(SNT) station or tenzing norgay bus terminal which are close by but to go to gangtok you have to go to SNT where there are many local jeeps that leaves every 30 minutes on time schedule so even if you are alone they have to leave as the bus .dont buy from someone else there shall be a counter where you can buy the tickets . there are many hotels to recommend but you can find one easyly . depending on your budget

for snow you could take a tour to changu lake which is about rough 50km its beautiful and worth visiting . and also the rumtek not for snow though is also about an hour not + . and there are lots of places in gantok to visit . for a tour its not a big thing to be planning .

oh dont worry you shall love once you are there but do carry some warm clothes .

sorry about the masked dance have no idea .

oh would had been great if you had more days like loonypooh you could head toward Darjeeling too . as you are traveling so far so why not see two places at a time . its just 5 hours drive . you get local jeeps direct to Darjeeling from Gangtok

Thanks for the info Gooroong.
You gave me much confidence that roads and everyting else will be Ok at that time in gangtok. I'll definitely plan my trip during this time and lemme see if I can include darjeeling in the trip as well. :-)
2 more questions: -
1. I'll be staying in Cherry Villa at Zero point. I hope it'll be a nice place and easily accesible. Do you have any idea abt it?
2. Suppose I've 5 days at my hand, how do I plan my itinerary?

Thanks,

ah !! about t he lodge or hotels don't expect good . but they shall be comfortable and clean as to where they are located . . dont know if they have the heating system so get some shawls along with you. try to get information before hand about the road condition to the north . as you never know the weather hope you agree about this with me .like where i live today in 2005 we had a heavy snow fall and in 2006 we barely had a day of snow . and this year the winter has already started with freezing temperature .

its is not the rains , its the road condition where you have lots of land slides and and blocked roads which is the major concern . else as you said it is perfect any time of the year .

Gud morning,
There has been some change in my plan. I've extended the trip for 9 days (including the train journey from delhi).
I've fixed the following itinerary (by googling & studying other posts).
26 Jan(Sat) - Day 01:
Delhi - NJP(train). reach on 27th jan.
27 Jan(Sun) - Day 02:
Reach NJP in morning & transfer to darjeeling. - Here I want to use cheapest & efficient transport (shared taxis will do. Anyone has any idea abt it). Local Sight seeing in Darjeeling. Stay Overnight.
28 Jan(Mon) - Day 03:
Local & around Sight seeing in Darjeeling. Stay Overnight. - Pls help me to fix the activities & places for this day.
29 Jan(Tue) - Day 04:
Transfer to Gangtok. Local places in Gangtok - Pls help me to fix the activities & places for this day.
30 Jan(Wed) - Day 05:
Depending on weather, One day out of 30 or 31, Visit to Changu Lake, baba Mandir & Nathula Pass - Pls let me know if it is possible to cover these 3 places in one day & at this time of year.
31 Jan(Thu) - Day 06: Pls suggest for these days i.e. 31 & 1.
1 Feb(Fri) - Day 07:
2 Feb (Sat) - Day 08 - Evening(4 P.M) train from NJP. TRansfer from Gangtok to NJP on public transport or shared taxi. I guess I can see only on-the-way place or is there any place to visit in NJP itself. Pls help me plan this day as well.
Thanks for the patienece.

Hi there,
Its good to know that ur planning ur trip to Sikkim & darj. Let me see if I can help u firm on it more…

The sharing taxi as Gooroong mentioned you can get it easily from Tenzing Norgay bus terminal.
For local sight seeing at darj you can check out mountaineering institute, chowrasta, mahakal mandir, botanical garden, tea garden…. And of course lots of shopping.

First day at Gangtok when you reach maybe you would like to just scout the local market…. Visit 31A lounge at 0 pt for dinner if you can….. u’ll get a good view of Gangtok from there. Don’t forget to arrange for your tashngu lake tour the next day.

2 nd day visiting baba mandir, Tsangu lake and Nathula is possible as it falls on the same way…. But I doubt if you’ll be able to go to Nathula…. Weather is an imp factor here.

3rd day you can visit… rumtek, ranka & sang…. It is a lovely drive abt an hr from Gangtok.

4th day, well u could pack a picnic and go to ray khola (river)  or take a drive towards the road to north Sikkim… some very int places around… check out my blog for more details.

Have a nice trip and let me know if I can provide you with more info.

Regards,

Hi,
This is robin from Kolkata. As per the Tour Schedule given here its fine except one vital place u will be missing. Thats North Sikkim. I would force u not to miss North Sikkim. Coz its like Heaven on Earth. Its worth visiting there. And I bet u will never like to come back from there....ha ha !!! 9 days is enough to plan north sikkim. Dont miss Yumthang Valley....!!! Otherwise u will certaingly regret not visiting North sikkim.

Plan it like :
27th : NJP to Darjeeling (Night Stay)
28th : Tiger Hill(sunrise) and Local sight seeing and transfer
to Gangtok.
29th : Visit Changu Lake / Baba Mandir / Nathula Pass(Night Stay)
30th : Visit North Sikkim on a (2 night 3 days) trip. Night Stay
in Lachun (a small beautiful village).
31st :Visit Yumthang Valley, Zero Point or Katao and ofcourse
the Hot spring in yumthang and then transfer to Lachen.
1st :Visti Chopta Valley and ofcourse the Divine Lake
Gurudongmar at an altitude of 17800ft. and back to Gangtok
2nd : Back to NJP for your Journey Back Home..........

*** This Tour maybe a bit tight but u got only 9 days....
This is the only way for a memorable Trip in 9 days. But offcourse if u r a nature lover.
