Hi friends,

Me and 2 friends is planning to visit Gangtok in this December first week.

I have some queries.

1. Is there any snow fall in Gangtok at this time? I have seen a news article saying route to Nathula pass and Tsongmo river is closed due to heavy snow fall.
http://isikkim.com/2011-11-heavy-sno...d-tsongu-08-2/ .
Can anybody please confirm it.

2. Since we are 3 people, can we get any share taxis over there in Gangtok.I think for Nathula pass, it will cost 600-700 rs per head if there are 5-6 people. Hiring a cab for 3 people will be expensive then.

Thanks,
Mlg

Answer1. It doesn't snow in Gangtok city. You can find it only in the higher reaches on your way to Tsomgo, which is likely to be under heaps of snow in December.

Answer2: Shared jeeps for Tsomgo and Nathula are easily available from Gangtok. Contact a travel agent or talk to your hotel guys. They will arrange for everything. Make sure to carry a copy of your ID proofs.

Happy journey.

Hi!!

I could not get what you meant by 'Shared taxi at Gangtok'?

Did you mean taxi rates from Siliguri to Gangtok?

Or Gangtok to Tsomgo-Nathula?

Or rates for Gangtok local site-seeing?

For your info, Gangtok to Tsomgo reserved Sumo should take around 2.5-3 K and for Nathula they charge around 4-5 K. Now if you divide that by 7-8 passengers which they carry on sharing basis, you shall get an idea of rates.

The chances of snow is very likely in Katao, if you are allowed to go there. As far as I know, Katao is closed for civilians since March.

Hi mig,
I am planning to visit gangtok in december as well. Am worried that main attractions like nathula, changu lake and gurumongdong will be closed due to snow fall. Did you enquire on this further? I enquired at the hotel and travel agencies, but they dont give clear answer - after confirming that there *is* snowfall, he says that 'no problem sir, you can visit nathu la'!!

Unfortunately, no can confirm that. Remember, the road is a high altitude road and gets plenty of snowfall in winters, and hence often gets closed. However, also remember that the road is used by the Indian army, so they clear the roadblocks and open it up quite fast.

Personally speaking, I have been twice to Nathula in December (strictly speaking once in Dec and once in 1st Jan) and didn't get struck. However, it seems that the winters have hit earlier this year, and Nathula was cut off in the last week of November (as per an IMer who has recently returned from there).

All the best with your trip.

I actually asked about the fare for local site seeing. Thanks for the info, friend.
