Thanks Robin. Actually I have booked my return tickets & I am having only 6N in hand. So I cant plan for 8days.

So as per your suggestion I should plan for Gangtok-Lachung-Lachen. And I will have to miss Pelling. I am so excited to visit Lachung/Lachen after your post.

Try booking your trip in Gangtok for 2n 3d in NOrth sikkim.
I think it would come around 1800-2000 INR each. But it was in 2005. Dont know current rate. As soon as you land in gangtok go booking for your North Sikkim Trip.
You may try Norling Tours and Travels. Also agents from your hotel can help you out.

Oh my God

Jyoti are u a photographer ??????
Coz you said the right thing to carry with a Camera in these places. I too is doing diploma in photography in kolkata.

There is a trend of getting overexpose snaps in these conditions i.e, snowscapes or bright subjects. Its always advisable to carry a polarizer in these conditions. Try buying one Marumi Polarizer. it would cost around 1200 INR.
Try giving 1 stop unders or 2 stops under expose if you are carrying a SLR Camera depending on the situation. ...ha hah ha.

Good Luck and happy shooting......

At these heights the sky does crazy things, a polariser can greatly improve your shots. I follow what is probably known as bracketing my shots.

YESSSS

YOU ARE RIGHT THERE. I TOO DO THE SAME. BUT HOW MANY SHOTS DO YOU TAKE WHILE BRAKETING ? 3 ?
It is usually 3 shots but i prefer taking 2 shots......ONe according to rules and the other always one stop under.
And i get the under one as my choice.

I just

returned from tour in Sikkim (West and East), Darjeeling and Kalimpong and found that tour operators left redundant with customs not permitting visiting hired vehicles (perhaps excepting only private cars), jeeps to tour attractions, this job is reserved for local taxis and jeeps. So hiring a jeep through tour operator is not advisable, as they only drop and pick-up passengers what can be easily done hiring jeep in jeep stands.

I am following this thread with interest as in exactly one month from now we will be in Sikkim. I would like to ask if there are any India-mikers out there who have travelled to North Sikkim and are (by an accident of birth) NON-Indian therefore unfortunately unable to visit some of the far-flung places just mentioned. If I have understood correctly, we are allowed to visit Thangu, and Chopta Valley, near to Lachen, but NOT Gurudongmar Lake or Tso Lhamu Lake. However, near to Lachung, the "Big Pass", is OK...? I keep looking at the maps and reading up information, but I get confused because some places have two names and each map looks a bit different! The Tsomgo (also called Changu) Lake is also OK with a restricted area permit, available in Gangtok, is that right? I apologise if these questions have already been answered elsewhere.

North Sikkim

I did not go there as it was to cold up there, even in Pelling. As North Sikkim is restricted area purchasing a tour from local tour operator is a must, and they will tell you everything you need where to go allowed. Tsongo lake trip is easily organised through even Gangtok taxists. Of course secretive obsession of Indian army is frustrating. Even in Kalimpong on the way to Durpin gompa withing city limits there are some generals posh villas and golf club - photography is strictly prohibited, when one girl from my group took picture of a cat on lovely lawn with flowers from our taxi, soldiers stopped us, but fortunately did not snatch her camera.
