Itinerary 2 is better, mainly because its utilising travel time well

As far as the old ladies, well Lachung may just about be okay but Yumthang is at an altitude (almost 12,000 feet) and it also gets quite windy and cold. Im not sure if that would be ideal! Additionally, the roads in North Sikkim are quite bumpy and the drive from Gangtok to Lachung is quite a long one! I guess if they are in good health, they could give it a try! (I hope I will be healthy enough to do it at that age!)

The kids are old enough and should not have any problems.

Tsongo (Changu) lake is also at an altitude (12,400 ft) while Nathula pass is even higher (14000 feet) so again they could be a bit tricky for people with breathing difficulties. The only advantage is that at least you can drive down quickly if someone has trouble breathing!

Places to stay - well depends on your budget, I think others who have travelled recently would be able to advise better (as also with regards to the car, although please note that for Yumthang trip, you have to book the entire tour which comes along with the car and hotel)
Some of my ramblings!

In my opinion both are designed to put a tick mark on the list – “I’ve done this” .
Dipendu, your are planning for a family trip and you have a mixed team … so you need 1 or two days break during your trip. I was referring to your itineraries – you are travelling everyday !!! Every morning each member will pack their baggage and move for the next destination. And as Sidch says please consider road condition / distance and all. Trust me, this is really a hectic tour with 3 Sr. citizens in the team.

I would recommend you to drop either Darjeeling-Kalimpong or Yumthang. That means Gangtok/Pelling is common and if you drop north Sikkim then visit Darjeeling side and plan Yumthang and Gurudongmar Lake in your next trip.

Spend one extra day in Darjeeling… one more day in Pelling and enjoy the place

For car rental you could refer to this thread: Car Rental in North Bengal & North-Eastern states

Happy travelling ……

Hi Dipendu,
In your trip you drop Kalimpong coz Darjeeling is closer to pelling. so don't make your tour longer as it is a family trip. One more thing you can do return to gangtok on the 2nd day which is feasible enough. after visiting yumthang you return to gangtok after lunch.

Hi Dipendu,

The early part of your itinerary sounds very hectic and involves a lot of travelling to high altitude places, which will be a problem for the seniors in your group. This is the bit that sounds a bit tricky

Quote:
12.10.13 - Day 03 - Guru dong Start for Gurudongmer lake, 60 kms from Lachen and come back by afternoon
13.10.13 - Day 04 - Lachen-Lachung Start from lachen to lachung, 1 hr journer journey
Lachung –Yumthang Excursion (24 Km. & 11,800 ft)- Zero Point
after breakfast drive to Yumthang-valley (known as Valley of Flowers)(24+24 km).
On the way back visit Sulpher Hot Spring. Back to resort for lunch.
Afternoon visit local Lachung village & villegers for there day-to-day lifestyle
& Lachung Monestry. Night halt at Lachung
Don't get me wrong, this should be fine for fit, healthy travellers but it will definitely be a problem for the seniors, esepcially if they suffer from bad back or asthama related problems. Gurudongmar is quite high and is not usually recommended for small children and seniors. So, perhaps it might be better for one of the vehicles to go off to Lachung on the 12th itself to let them explore Zero Point - Katao and the town on that day. The next day the remaining group could join up as per your schedule and explore Yumthang. Again Yumthang AND Katao on the same day could turn out to be a bit of a burden for the seniors, that is why I suggested that they could do it on the 12th and they could relax in Lachung after visiting Yumthang while you guys could go up to Katao and come back.

This should give them enough rest and recuperation for the bone jarring return to Gangtok.

The rest seems fine except that Pelling to Darjeeling is definitely not 2 hours, its more like 4 hours!

agree!

@ Dipendu

Day 4 not practical (if included zero point)

if you really want to meet all the points, try (if health allows) to move to Lachung on Day 3 evening

Quote:
11.10.13 - Day 02 - Gangtok-Lachen Start for Lachen after breakfast, 6 hrs drive

14.10.13 - Day 05 - Lachung-Gangtok (About 117kms/06 Hrs. drive)
road restoration still going on few parts after the cloudburst................coun t it around 10/12 hrs including breaks

Quote:
drive to Yumthang-valley (known as Valley of Flowers)
be strong mentally, you'll not get any flowers at that time
.

Totaly confused how to explore the beautiful earth when one life is too short to complete my great India

Sikkim needs more to enjoy the culture and environments. You have clubbed West Sikkim and North Sikkim into one tour. Did you consider splitting them into two trips and do it at a doable pace.

Day 8 is not enough for all those activities. You may need 1.5 days to do it or you would be very tired by end of Day 8.

Thanks everybody for sparing your valuable time to guide/advise me.

Sidch Bro, thanks for your advise about Gurudongmar.

I will update my latest plan/itinerary for valued suggestion/advise my friends.

Further, I am going to finalise two vehicles (Max) for the entire tour i.e. NJP to NJP @ 24k per vehicle (offered by him). And also with a tour operator @ 2.5k per day per person for lodging/fooding for the entire tour.

Please suggest me about the same too.

Thank you once again.....

For North Sikkim, its likely to be between 15 degrees in the day (if its sunny) and could go down to the near 0s in the night. If it gets overcast and windy, the chill factor will easily drop temperatures by 5 degrees. Gurudongmar will be very cold if its not sunny and would definitely be close to the low 5s or around 0. Again the wind factor will play a big role. At this altitude, when the sun comes out though, everything just heats up nicely, so you could have the temperature fluctuating between 15 degrees to 5 at Gurudongmar, dependent on the weather.

Make sure you take good ear muffs, scarves and good gloves and you should be prepared for anything!
