China takes Sikkim of official map.

I read in an Indian newspaper that China has now taken Sikkim of it's official map of china and also removed any references to Sikkim from it's list of territories.

Some months ago the Indian prime minister went to China for some meetings and a land crossing was opened from southeast Sikkim into China, Still don’t know if tourists can use this crossing.

steven, the land crossing is "supposed" to open. Also the crossing from Kinnaur to Tibet (Kailash) is "supposed" to open. I am eagerly waiting for these "news".

As of today, the old situation prevails.

Rest assured, if this happens and I am still around on Planet Earth, I'll post it on IM.

The way I´ve read it, the agreement speaks only of trade . This document ,while not being official seems well researched, speaks of " entry and exit of persons , transport and commodities engaged in border trade".

It`s symtomatic that China says something by being silent. I´ve tried for some time to find some confirmation that the Kailash ring road has been cancelled. According to the official chinese Tibet website, it seems that there is no place called Kailash, even on the Ngari section.

Yes, vistet, China says everything by maintaining silence.

The grapevine had it that China was interested in opening up the Sikkim end..... and Vajpayee was interested in opening up the Kailash pilgrimage route via the Hindustan-Tibet Road.

Somewhere, somehow.... China is reluctant abt Kailash, India manages to put Sikkim on the back-burner.

The CII is not so dense as to bring out a detailed paper on Indo-China trade via Nathu-La in Sikkim if there was no "leak" from New Delhi.

Even now, there must be some sort of stalemate. If Vajpayee comes back as PM with a better majority, this issue will crop up. Another very contentious issue is that China still shows parts of Arunachal Pradesh as inside their territory. These "map-games" never cease.

Let us hope for the best.

.. but not in the immediate future : Tibetan Review reports in the latest issue of two official publications ( China 2004 & China in Diagrams) being distributed at the International Conference of Asian Political Parties showing Sikkim as a separate country on maps and in text. The event was hosted by the Chinese Communist Party.

It should be interesting to see the next edition of "World Affairs Yearbook" , the publication that aknowleged Indian control over Sikkim after last years talks.
