Can one go straight to Pelling from New Jalpaiguri
We are going for a week to Sikkim and after looking at some websites Pelling has caught our fancy. We want to go there straight from New Jalpaiguri after reaching there around 11 in the morning if the train is on time. Is it feasible? We plan to explore just around Pelling, so are there any places that people here would recommend? I hope one can reach Pelling in December.

Greenman, thanks for the reply. Another question, if we don't go to Gangtok are we missing much? We like quiet and peace and mountain peaks. Nothing else is much required. What do you all say?

Gangtok is best avoided. Suggest you visit Khechuperi lake and Tashiding monastery from Pelling if you have the time

- NJP to SNT (Sikkim National Transport) stand at Shiliguri town by rickshaw (25-30 Rs / rickshaw) - SNT to Pelling by reserved jeep or a shared Jeep for Jorthang (clawhammer is rite). - Jorthang to Pelling by shared jeep (if direct jeep is not available for Pelling take a break either at Legship or at Gezing). Places around Pelling: There is a standard local tour that covers khecheopalri lake, Pemayangtse Monastery, Sinsore Bridge, Kanchengungha fals etc. And a recommended short hike up to Sangakcholing Monastery from Helipad (upper Pelling). As you have enough time in hand, plz do not miss Yuksam which was the capital of Sikkim. Yuksam is the start point of Dzongri – Goecha la trek. If you are not going to cover Gangtok: In my opinion you are going to miss a lot. The view of Tsomgo, Baba Mandir during this time is just breathtaking ! Rumtek Monastery is a Gem, Institute of Tibetology is one of its kind, the Orchid is not a very common thing for the dwellers of plains like us so Orchid Show is something different. Overall, the cleanliness, law and order and disciplined city like Gangtok is great. no other Indian city can be compared with it. if you have some time, Mridula, plz do not miss this opportunity. Caution : Plz keep good backup of Pelling pix, not only in hard drive. -

The question is whether one can reach Pelling after getting down from the train at 11.00 am or so. My experience says that it would be slightly difficult as the communication from Jorthang to Pelling is not that frequent. Would prefer to start early next morning, if no direct Jeep from SNT Bus stand is available.
Alternate, ask for the Gurudwara in Siliguri and look to hire a vehicle for Pelling directly. The last time I was there, had problems since my train reached at 12 in the noon. Hope this helps. |

“as the communication from Jorthang to Pelling is not that frequent.”
- awwwww……. OK, if you say the “direct” communication from Jorthang to Pelling is not so frequent you are right. But caster, as it was mentioned in the earlier post that another break either at Legship or at Gezing might help you. Else a reserved jeep from Jorthang will be comparatively economical. What I think, instead of spending money to stay at Shiliguri you can hire a jeep from Jorthang and reach Pelling directly. |

Now that I am back from Sikkim, the answer to my question is yes. One can go straight to Pelling after reaching New Jalpaiguri. Shared jeeps are not directly available from the station (at least we could not find them) but they are available from Siliguri. Siliguri is 7-8 km from New Jalpaiguri and can be reached by a tempo or a cycle rickshaw.
