1) What is the best season to visit Sikkim?

2) Is there any snowfall in Sikkim, if yes when?

3) What are the places of interest to see in Sikkim?

4) We reside in Delhi so what is the ideal route we should take?

5) What are the good hotels we can stay in?

6) Is there any issue in getting good veg food in sikkim ?

The best season IMO is autumn (Oct-Dec) and winter (January, if you can brave the cold). The weather is at its best then. Avoid monsoons, the worst season to be in Sikkim.

Loads actually. Places like Tsomgo lake, Nathula, Yumthang, Yumesamdong, Gurudongmar lake, Katao etc. get tons of snowfall. The best season to experience snowfall is again the time I mentioned. However, the snow stays till late March in most places.

Tough question to answer. Every bend of the state provides something unique. I would reccomend North (for natural beauty) and West Sikkim (for the views of Mt. Kanchenjunga)as must watch though, not taking anything away from East or South, which are equally beatiful.

The idea route should be - fly to Bagdogra and hire a car from there to Sikkim.

Depends on where you want to stay. Remember, Sikkim is not only about Gangtok. So, it depends on your itenerary when it comes to finding good hotels. You can try searching other posts in the forum for details of hotels.

Dear Sagarneel,
I become a big fan of indiamike when surfing for advice about Sikkim tour. After that i found every thing from your posts. You are a true sikim lover. Thank you for your posts. i have got a lot of help from those.
I don't know the proper procedure to post,so i am communicating with you this way.
I am going for a trip to sikkim & Lava from 17.06.2011. If possible give me some advice.
My plan is:
18.06- NJP>> Gangtok
19.06- Gangtok>>Changu+Nathula>>Gangt ok
20.06- Sight seeing at Gangtok
21.06- 3Day,2Night tour for north sikim(Gurudingmar Lake+Yumthang+Ziro Point)
23.06- Gangtok
24.06- Rishop
25.06- Rishop
26.06- lolegaon
27.06- Lava
28.06- Back to NJP

My question is : how is the weather in north Sikkim during this time? during what period rains start here? Is it possible to visit gurudongmar lake, yumthang, nathula etc during this time?
I will be traveling with my wife with budget of rs.20000/-. Is it sufficient?
Please help.
I also send you a friend request.
thanks in advance.

Hello Avra,

Welcome to IM and the family of Sikkim lovers

Regarding your query:
The weather in Sikkim (and for the hills in North Bengal for that matter) is going to be tricky during July. It tends to rain heavily during the time you have planned your trip. Although, I don't want to demotivate you by any chance, and keeping in mind that the monsoons in the hills have their own beauty, I would suggest that you remain open on compromising a few places like Lava if required. Since you are ravelling to North Sikkim, you stand a chance of getting stuck due to landslides and raodblocks due to heavy rain. Although, all the places you mentioned are perfectly doable in case there's no landslide/roadblock, they can pose a problem in case these calamities do happen. As Tsomgo/ Nathula is a military area, and the road is extensively used by the army, the roadblocks are cleared off faster as compared to the North Sikkim road.

So the bottomline is - keep spare days in hand (I can see you have a spare day on 23rd at Gangtok; consider to accomodate 27 th as a spare day too i.e by curtailing Lava if need be), and I am sure you'll be at ease. One has to be extremely unfortunate to get stuck for more than 2 days even if rains.

Regarding your budget, Rs. 20000 all inclusive for two people seems to be a bit tight. You can consider tagging yourself with others travelling to North Sikkim, instead of going for an exclusive vehicle, in case you want the trip to fit into your budget.

And, I have accepted your friend request

Hope this helps.

Sagarneel.

Thank you for your quick reply. i will follow your valuable guideline. But i get afraid about landslide & roadblocks. I think it will be too risky to go for North sikim. Can you kindly sugest me another tour plan for 18th to 27th June?

In case you want to cancel North Sikkim, then you can plan for West Sikkim. Follow your previous plan for Gangtok/Nathula and Rishyap/Lava, just swap North Sikkim with places like Uttarey/Kaluk/Rinchenpong. 4days/3 nights will be good to cover 2out of the 3 of the places I have mentioned.

Zuluk, Rishi is also a good option, and so is the Dzongu area (in North Sikkim).

To create a new thread, go to Forums on the top of the page --> Select the forum (Sikkim in this case) --> Click on the New thread button on the top left of the page.

@avra
Wherever you go in Sikkim now the weather is really bad in the sense roads are very frequently being blocked and dont expect to see snow peaks at this time of year.So if you can fix your mindset on having a leisurely holiday this is the perfect time to enjoy the hills of Sikkim, else you will get disheartened.I just came back on 13.06.11 from Sikkim and can guide you if you call me on 9330957007.

Finding snow in May might be tough. The only chances you have is en route to Gurudongmar lake if you're very lucky or if there's a abrupt weather change...however, that's a remote possibility again.

Although watching Mt. K depends a lot on fortune (specially seeing a sunset on Mt. K is almost equivalent to getting a lottery), there are quite a few places in Sikkim from where you can se Mt. K. Most of West Sikkim (Pelling, Kaluk, Rinchenpong, Bermiok etc.) offer good views of K...some places in East Sikkim (Lungthung, Tukla etc.) and North Sikkim (Singhik, Dzongu) too offer good views.

Apart from Rumtek monastery, you can visit Pemyangtse monastery near Pelling. Its one of the olderst monasteries in Sikkim. There are quite a few other monasteries that lie all over the state.

Firstly, you choose a good time to visit.
I think, you can find your answer already in #2 by SagarneelDa in above for Ajaysin.

For your first question, Prepare your Trip program according to your test, interest and the ages of any seniors or kids if in your team. Without knowing the informations about those it is very tough to answer. But IMers are always here to fine tune your trip plan.
