Are dangerous dogs a notable hazard in Sikkim?
Is Sikkim one of those places where you need to be on guard against attacks by dogs? Are there fierce guard dogs in the countryside or packs of strays in towns? Having encountered this elsewhere, it would be good to be forewarned, if anyone can comment whether yes or no.

They are mostly territorial at night and this can be pretty frightening. During the day however, I never had a problem anywhere. Don't antagonise them, throw stones or try to beat them, and you should be fine. Good luck!

there is a whole sub-genre of tales about the ferocious tibetan dogs , and by inference tibetan/Ladakhi/Sikkimese dogs as well. I've only met two dogs that really seemed to want to eat me , and both were safely chained. As sirensongs says , you mostly get back the attitude you're giving out - and sometimes what earlier persons has given out .
walking with a torch us a good idea , startling dogs at night is not a good idea.

In my experience Sikkim differs from the rest of the country in so many ways, but not when it comes to dogs -- they sleep all day and bark all night as in most of India.
Give them a wide berth after dark, and you're very unlikely to have any problems. |

i don't recall even seeing dogs in sikkim!
presumably, they were there, of course, but i didn't take note, likely because there weren't many and not in groups. he first i encountered the "dog problem" was in darjeeling but, as you can see below, they were hardly ferocious. i've never seen such laid-back animals. in the mornings, i'd find them sleeping in a pile all around the police booth. of course, they my be docile only by day--i was almost never out after dark. on the rare occasions i was, i saw no dogs at all.
