A good place to stay for a month?

Hi, this is my first post but i have been an observer for a long time. I am heading to India for December and January of this year and was thinking of spending most of my time in Darjeeling/Sikkim area. I would like to stay still for a month at least, recieve some music tuition, meditate, perhaps exchange english lessons, make art and get to know one area thoroughly. Im up for suggestions of where and how to spend this time. Ive never been to this area of india so i a not sure what to expect.I know i could do these things in a place like Macleod Gange but id like to avoid the masses a little! Thanks

I am a little confused about your question which is not very specific. Are you interested in lodging suggestions or are you asking about towns?
There are many lodging opportunities in Darjeeling, from which you could visit Sikkim easily. It is a gorgeous place to be. I stayed there for over a month and could have easily stayed much longer. Sikkim is less populated than Darjeeling if you want to be somewhere quieter but the outskirts of Darjeeling are very peaceful as well.

Would be painful cold in D and S at that time of year.

For the things you want to study I would suggest Varanasi.

My personal favorite place where I could stay for ever is Udaipur.

Did you want out of the way suggestions?

It gets ff'ing cold up there yes, but nothing you can't dress for.

I asked one of our members who did a shorter trip there last winter to comment. Hope she'll be in.

Was fascinated to hear in the meantime RV spent a month there. Quite the unhurried fellow eh?

I guess to clarify....Ive been to varanasi but this time was interested in learning more tibetan styles of music and instruments. Has anyone heard of anywhere or anyone that does this? I know it will be cold but ive been in northern indian winters before so know what to expect. Any suggestion welcome.

Darjeeling has a cultural festival that happens around late Oct./early Nov. There are many musical performances of the local music of the area. If you are unable to make it to that, you might inquire around town about getting in touch with some of those musicians.

There are many good children's schools in the area, so another thought is to check in the schools to see if they have any music programs or somebody that can point you in the right direction.

As for weather, if you are from England you should find it chilly but tolerable. I am from California and it was not too cold for me, but I like the cold weather. Anyway it was a welcome change from hot, muggy Kolkata. Apparently last year it snowned a little bit, I believe IM member Somnath took some photos/video of the snowfall.
