10 Days in Sikkim
Hi,
I am planning a 10 day trip to Sikkim with my wife starting from Mumbai on 22 Feb 07. I am planning to visit Gangtok, Kalimpong, Pelling & Darjeeling. No trekking, just sight seeing & relaxing. Please suggest the best travel plan & Best places to stay & visit. Thanks, Kishore |

1. First go to Darjeeling from SIliguri (NJP). There is toy train and the share jeep service (Rs. 80 each).
2. Darjeeling. (local sight seeing) 3. From Darjeeling to Kalimpong. There is share jeep service. 4. Kalimpong. (local sight seeing) 5. Kalimpong to Gangtok. There is share jeep service. 6. Gangtok. (local sight seeing) 7. Gangtok. (tsongmo lake and Nathula pass) 8. Gangtok to Pelling. There is share jeep service. 9. Pelling. (local sight seeing) 10. Pelling to Siliguri (NJP). There is share jeep, very few direct. However, if you come down to Jorethang in a share jeep, you will get plenty to Siliguri. Share jeep fares are approx. Rs. 80-100 per person in this sectors. happy journey Bhaswaran |

Bagdogra-Darjeeling-Kalimpong-Gangtok
I would suggest skip Kalimpong and spend more time in Sikkim. North Sikkim is virgin & wild |

You can also follow the same plan if you reach Bagdogra by air.
You can book a direct car to Darjeeling in that case. Share taxi is available from SIliguri bus stand. Probably you will not be able to catch the toy train as it leaves Siliguri Junction station at 9:27 in the morning. Standard accomodation is avilable at the West Bengal Tourism Tourist Bungalow at Darjeeling, this is good. DGHC lodging is also standard at Kalimpong (very beautiful location, atop Delo Hill). Basically, there are many nice category hotels in Darjeeling and Gangtok. You can search the net for this and book online. Overall, good accomodation is present in all the four places you mentioned. happy journey, Bhaswaran |

Just got back myself and I found the "site seeing" in the locations you mentioned rather disapointing beyond a few of the monasteries, all the decent size towns were ugly concrete constructions aswell.
Even if your not trekking I'd definately recommend going to Yuksom from Pelling stopping off at Khecocheplari Lake(far nicer than Tsongmo IMHO) on the way. It may not have the mountain views of some of the other sites but the countryside is a great mix of woodland and terraced paddy fields. There are a few really impressive waterfalls that are very easy to access from the road aswell. I'd recommend the Mt Narsing hotel in Ravangla aswell if you want to spend a day or two relaxing. Out in the countryside rather than the modern town with individual cabbins and an amazing(different to Pelling/Darjeeling) mountain view. |

Ravangla is a wonderful place to relax for a few days. The mountain view is simply awsome.

As I said though I found the towns and their sites a big disapointment. Other than a small section at the top of Darjeeling there were few if any old buildings/streets and very little character. If you just want to relax and visit sites near a hotel I'd seriously recommend paying the extra to visit Bhutan. |

I am planning for a 10 day tour to Sikkim including the interiors of North Sikkim like Katao, Damang, Chho-Lha-mo, Mugithang, Lasher Valley etc in Decemenber, with my wife and kids.
Reading through various threads on this site and elsewhere I presume we might see some difficulties in terms of food, especially for vegeratians like us. Can somebody tell whether it is possible to carry heat-and-eat packaged food from Gangtok? ...Pankaj |
