I've been reading about the "eve teasing", groping, etc. and had to think...what would happen if I grabbed back???

Would they be so flabbergasted by the action that they'd never grope again? Or, would it just lead down a road no one wants to go???

Has anyone tried this??? I don't know if I'd have the courage, but it might be an interesting experiment.

Strange what you think about in the days before you leave........

The only problem is that you could surrender your credibility on the issue. If there is truly a problem, and you sound an alarm, people will rush to your aid and--very possibly--beat the crap out of the guy. In India, it is far better to play the aggrieved victim, since that's the idea people will have in their minds. Indians know that white girls can get "teased," and they don't like it any more than you do.

Remember that in India, if a woman is raped, the papers report that a guy "outraged her modesty." Best not do anything that suggests you are immodest.

You are well within your rights to slap the offender and create a scene. People will rush to your aid and it will culminate in what Merchant has said above : the offender getting the thrashing of his life.

Agree with both Merchant and Shimla.
If you are in a place with lots of people around, just make a little noice (i.e slap him in face), you will be more than secure.
But then if you are in a remote place or at a place where there are no humans, no one can help you except yourself (slap again).
Majority of Indian cities are very secure (as India has more than one billion population).
1. Try avoiding going out alone in dark of night for no reason in filthy places. They still are safe, but one bad apple can spoil your party.
2. Do not make too much of a friend of somebody you don't know, and even if you did, there is no reason why you should accept his/her invitation for a late night party at a place you aren't sure is safe.

in japan the women on the transit trains carry a big stickpin. when they are groped they give the punter a good spiking nice and quiet like -DUH!!

what are they gonna say or do? HEY!!! i was groping this foreigner and she stuck me when i put my hand on her ass, what nerve! :-))

The guys are doing it because they dare. if you show resistance they will back down. 'opportunity'.

concoran makes a good point as well -its nice to have a chat with people you meet in transit but keep your distance, dont become friendly, dont accept food and never as your mother told you...go with strangers!

merchant has good advices -make a scene...dress modestly.
