I saw warning notices posted recently in Boston and Chicago, and saw several oriental looking "Buddhist style" type persons trying to plant dubious gifts on tourists, in return for cash "offerings".

I had already attained enlightenment, and told them to F Off. They seemed quite worldly wise for monks, as they certainly understood my instruction...

Technically speaking they are not real Brahmins.
A Brahmin is someone who is twice born (a Dvija), in other words they have died while living (to their separate sense of self).
The so called Brahmins have turned this into a ritual of initiation which they have used to manipulate & extract money from the less well off, they have used it to have power over people for thousands of years.

Strictly speaking anyone from anywhere can become a Dvija or Brahmin, once they have died while living (which isn't easy!), it is not something you can get through birth right.

It's a common scam at many places. We are natives but still fell for it because of the superstitious ones in our group. A friendly old brahman started chatting with us At devprayag while we were taking a dip. As soon as we came out he offered us a flower and within moments we were part of a ceremony. Had to pay him total 100 bucks in 2009. But as soon as we did so a horde of young and old brahmans descended on us and literally begged and grabbed for money. Pathetic to see them literally begging for a rupee or two. We were 3 so pushed them away easily.
So always keep your guard up if you see holy men approaching with the tools of their trade. A flower, a plate of offerings or a vessel of sandal or vermilion for tilak. Chant out loud
No money no money
Or
Paisa khatam
Paisa nahi hai
