Regarding all information: consider the source. Before my secondd trip to India in 1989 I checked my government's website regarding travel in India. They suggested I not go; I went anyway. The reason for the warning was that elections were being held, the Golden Temple in Amritsar had been taken over by Sikh's, Indira Gandhi would soon be (if she hadn't already) been assasinated. Delhi was eerily quiet the night I arrived; Varanasi - usually a very vibrant city, was a whisper of it's former self, especially at night when police presence was at a maximum.
I was in Varanasi last year when three (at least three) bombs went off in the city, one (at the Sankat Mochan Temple) very close to my guest house. Though the city was clearly shaken after the bombings, it soon returned to it's over-the-top-vibrant-self. The world is clearly a different place than it was on my first trip to India in 1982. Most tourists who go to India do not get blown up or kidnapped. I felt it in '82 and I felt it last year - my fifth trip to India - I feel safer in India than in my own country. India is worth it. Go.

It could be written for most countries. Its not that its wrong but that it has to be taken in context with relative hazards around the world. Is there a crime free country? Who ever registers with their embassy? The comment about "extreme instabilty" is bolix. India is both unstable and stable in a delightful paradox. So use the paper it was sent on in an emergency for toiletary purposes after reading..

I think I'd feel safer knowing I'm not at a Las Vegas school bus stop, Utah shopping mall, Colorado church or high school, etc...
The holidays are getting dangerous in these here parts.

Yeah, it's kind of amazing, when you think about it, that a crazed sniper attacking a suburban shopping mall is considered business as usual in the US, but don't go to such-and-such country, because ohnoes terrorists!
I would bet that not even one in 100 Americans has decided to avoid malls, schools, bus stops, political candidates' offices, etc. over the last few weeks. But probably 20 of that same 100 would tell you not to travel to India. That said, Nick seems to be Canadian, and Canada doesn't have near the problems the US does with gun-toting psychos. |

The advice that certain areas should be completely avoided is, of course, a personal one, but if a traveller were to run into trouble in any of those areas then their insurance company might not be prepared to pay out if it could be shown that they had travelled against official government advice.

Why not check out some Indian news sources on the net and follow them day by day. Even then, allow for the fact that newspapers are in the business of publishing bad, rather than good news.
It''l give you a better flavour, though, of day-to-day happenings. If you get the impression from your reading, that certain areas should not be visited, it's quite likely you'll find the same advice given here or on other travel forums. Risk of terrorist attack is certainly something I think of a great deal less here than I did during three decades of living in London.

guns. It's a much better screening process than in the US .... but certainly never 100% fool/psycho-proof. ![]() |

Here's some news about "positive" violence in India. I feel weird reading it because I'm totally behind them, but feel like I shouldn't be. Been mulling this over a couple of days now. Any thoughts?

.... and I always thought a 'Pink Lady' was some sort of gin concoction. Regardless - it looks like the both versions might give the abuser a bit of a hangover.
