how do you avoid being charged extra to cover the rickshaw-wallahs comission if you arrive at a hotel by rickshaw or taxi etc.? maybe this is a silly question,
but i dont understand how you can get around this. does the rickshaw driver get commission everytime he drops you off at a hotel even if you've told him to bring u there? Jenn xx |

The tip a rickshaw driver receives from the hotel is a small one and it isn't charged to your bill!!
Many drivers will just drop you at the hotel and not even bother to try for commission. If you think well I found the hotel and the rickshaw driver has been paid and played no part in finding this hotel just grab you bags say thank you and be on your way! The hotel will usually sort out any problems! But as I said there's no harm in letting the hotel (if it is their policy, some never tip drivers) pay the rickshaw wallah!! It isn't in most cases transferred to your bill! |

It's usually not much 10-30 rupees!! Just one thing make sure you attend to the formalities of booking the room! otherwise there are few unscrupulous drivers and hoteliers that may conpsire to fleece the whitie but this doesn't happen a lot. Anyway as I said the driver doesn't do any talking, you do!

is it really necessary to book a room, as opposed to just turning up?

probably a good idea to book if you're arriving in a city late at night, or at the end of a very long journey, when you're likely to be tired. but it's not high season at the moment, so you should be ok to just turn up in most places. booking is good for convienience

Experience only will teach you how much things should cost.
Getting that experience costs! It is all part of the experience ![]() Don't mind too much if you are overcharged by auto drivers, persuaded to give bigger tips to hotel staff, sold things at a slightly higher price, etc. At least it is usually done with a smile! Enjoy ![]()

god, what on earth was i worrying about? heh
the touts didn't really bother me to be honest. sure you got a few, "rickshaw mam" walking down the street but besides that, it wasn't really a big deal like the LP and everyone makes out. we never went to any tout reccomended hotels. we always knew where we were going. and if anyone tried to bring us we just said no and that was the end of it. |
