That's because time flows backwards here in India

Didn't Einstein already observe that?

My point ? I was lucky.

One day I'll go back to the airport and thank the tout.

I agree that with some IM's that (some) touts can serve a purpose and depending on the circumstances, can be a blessing in disguise.

I had the same experience last summer at KTM airport, stayed at Pilgrims GH - nice place, lovely garden, good deal. I'm thinking of staying there again in a couple of weeks - my one complaint is the way they keep the place completely locked up at night with no signage visible from the street - I got terribly lost my first night. If you were there on May 24 last year and you saw a frantic, jetlagged gori in a red salwar kameez walking up and down the same street in Thamel, rickshaw wallahs in hot pursuit, swearing that's where the hotel was but where's the frickin' sign - that was me.

I might stay at the KTM GH just because all of the taxi drivers know where it is - it's impossible to get lost there!!

Sounds real

Sounds like your desk man spoke the truth. Problems like this, I found, can be common in India. If anyone tries to intimidate you or 'smutt' throw at someone you need to be a bit suspicious and form your own opinions. Especially in areas where income is limited and there are many tourists.
