I was thinking about that, I remember reading or hearing something to the effect that the con artist plays on the mark's readiness to cheat someone else or do something illegal.

But some scams just involve dishonest sales events - selling people non-existent or underwater property, or getting them to make fraudulent "investments" that go into the pocket of the (disappearing) "salesman."

I'd continue to be more sympathetic to Crystal - and probably become sympathetic again - if she'd stayed in the conversation, but I am at this point thinking trollerie may be going on.

Though it is useful to be reminded that when you travel you can run into more complex scams as well as simpler things like being told your hotel has burned down . . .

One has to give people a day or two to come back --- I've made that mistake myself. Some people have internet at home only, some at work only, some only in public places.

So give her a day or two.

In which time, if there are no further responses, the thread will have slipped away into IM's past anyway...

...These people should cut out the middle man!

Go buy a pack of precious stones, send it to themselves, or take it back and flog them.

If they are not prepared to be smugglers on their own accord, and take the risk, both ends, then why do they do it for someone else? And why do they let those people persuade them it will be easy?

Well, its not exactly free lunch for the scamsters

They have to put in some effort...
1. spot a likely target
2. arrange initial confidence building measures - spend money on drinks, local trips etc.
3. some spending required on fradulent papers, stamps etc
4. most likely - bribe some local officials
5. have some kind of emergency exit plans in case whole thing backfires.

I guess only the ones who have done a good groundwork succeed in this trade.

So.... No free lunch

She's quite possibly involved in a marathon session of one of her profiled guilty pleasures. ...... chocolate ice cream eating to be specific.
- so give her some MORE time please.
