Well, yes, discontentment will create dissent. It's almost a physical law. Too bad policymakers need to reinvent it every other decade.

You can dangle a carrot in front of someone's nose only for so long.

Can you please suggest where such large scale economic reforms have been tried before ? where do we have an example of them not working ?

Shashank, other readers will consider this off-topic. Others will note that the author is a renowned radical leftwing no-good. In any case, if it's available where you are, try reading Eduardo Galeano's The Open Veins of Latin America, and perhaps some of his other works.

He painfully dissects the effects of Western economic attitudes on his continent from the days of the first invaders in the 1500s, and it won't make you smile (in fact I could never finish it because of this -- it is profoundly depressing), but it offers good insights on the workings of (proto-) capitalism.

For starters, read my earlier post about rising disparity figures in the US

"Economic reforms" is a nice phrase, and it can mean whatever you want it to mean.

But our planners are betting on the trickle down theory. Google and take your pick as to its lack of success worldwide, including in the US.

That is why they are not calling in the trickle down theory here. They are calling it 'inclusive growth'... which you will hear more of, because election year may well be a week or so away

Inclusive growth! Hey, that's a nice piece of management lingo!

btw Going widely off-topic as we are now anyway (hey, it beats discussing baseball caps), I was reminded here of The Yes Men. Funny gang, check them out.

It should be possible to trade with USA and other countries.

Whether it is possible to trade without domination, and eventual extraction of the life blood --- well, I have my doubts.
Then we will have to learn the trick of trade (excuse the bad pun) - to use it to our benefit, without screwing ourselves. It is always possible to trade without being dominated. The Americans are governed by self-interest, so shud we.
Now if we (Indians) cud only agree what our self-interest is....

Point to ponder - farmer suicides were very few before the days of liberalisation, compared to now.
A very-well written sermon, if I may say so. But it does negate the complete outsider bit. Make that an incomplete outsider.

India is a good example. Exclusive growth, taking a cue from Cap'n, is what we have right now.

Along with that other 'killer' - "development"! U can win an election with that word nowadays.

Most of the U.S. was or is on UDMA or CDMA - well, non-GSM.

You know, I often, (to some people's annoyance ) bring this stuff up.

Part of the reason is fear.

When will rising disparity result in unrest which shakes up our middle class cocoons?
It takes only 10000 or so aggressive protestors to paralyse a city.

Watch this space.

I thought people were talking mobile phone protocols, for a minute, then I realised it must be some sort of economic dogma I hadn't heard of, so I kept quiet.

Now I realise you were talking about phones!

Gosh... so it was!

Hey, at least you stuck to abreviations. I'm glad you didn't throw in any acronyms there!

Actually in NZ CDMA was an outstanding success (although the incumbent telco wanted to go GSM originally - the govt pushed it towards CDMA). Steadily lost ground to GSM in the voice stakes (now has slighly less than 50% of the market) but absolutely dominated the data market (mobile internet connections - had about 85% of the market). NZ is now going totally GSM for one reason - roaming.

Anyway - enough of that - the normal people will be unconscious by now...
