Hm. Didn't you just love those days when you had no phone, no insurance, no anything (and a telephone phobia to go with it).

ps I likewise love all those friends calling you up over some crappy distorted line hastily running around on a crowded and noisy street and being worried about the length of their calls -- not to mention the cost of calling them up

In a word, I guess I'm getting old

I think THATS what really got my goat and made me throw away the cellphone. Crappy line, totally unconnected conversation and endless amounts of repetition that it was causing them a fortune to call me up. Don't get me wrong, I realised that I was doing the same thing myself, often centering my conversation around the salient features of the monthly plan of my phone bill...and how totally inadequate it was for my requirements!!!

Somewhere along the way, I gave up!

I have a mobile, but it's for my convenience, not others. I keep it turned off most of the time, unless I want to use it. I certainly wouldn't give the number to my clients, as I don't want to be talking about their business while I'm on the bus, in the market, or walking down the street.

off topic...mobile phones & India....

Anyone see a TV programme called Phonejacker?

(A man phones people pretending to be different people)

They regularly had a wonderful phone call from a call centre in India, a man would try to sell you a terrible monthly deal, but would say that they offer extra "ring-dings" (ringtones). it was very funny.

and the phone calls from an African man trying to get your bank details were hilarious....

"there is a mouse stuck in your ATM, we can only get the mouse out if you give us your bank details"

Shall we merge this thread with the Walmart thread?

Even here you can find young Indians who seem to want, as the Capt. puts it, India to become America.

And, sadly, I believe it will.

In another thread somebody else is bemoaning the lost spiritual age of India untouched by capitalism, as if such a thing ever existed. It is too easy to put on those rose-tinted specs.

I can say, though, with no rose-tints, not even contact lenses, that it is just still (at least in some areas) possible to chase a bunch of children away from the front of your house rather than have them remain there subjecting you to a barrage of foul-mouthed abuse. It is also possible to approach a group of teenagers in the street without feeling threatened.

But the baseball caps are on the way, and I fear that this may the last generation.

You are absolutely right, I definitely give preference to all those totally drunk, horny, vomiting, 'football club-songs' singing (luckily no Bollywood crap!) British 30-something lads visiting Amsterdam (especially the Red Light District).

Unfortunately stupidity is more contagious than knowledge

Enjoy!
The point being, vdvoort, is that boorish and threatening behaviour is to be expected from a certain type of British tourist (and non-tourist, hence my comment about 'scumbags who hang around Co-op etc.'). It's just worrying that Indian youth seems to look West for it's cultural references for the reasons outlined perfectly by steven-ber.
I'm certainly no Rose tinted 'Roland' who thinks India is some sort of utopian paradise, it isn't, I was mearly lamenting the move towards the western values of anti social and selfish behaiviour.

As for your "Unfortunately stupidity is more contagious than knowledge" quote, could you explain this please, as I'm obviously a bit stupid.

Then why should I bother trying to explain ;-) ?

....you don't need to be available 24 hrs. a day....

Newsflash! Your mobile can be switched off...

A merry Christmas and silent nights to all of you.

Enjoy!

Is this IndiaMike or GrumpyOldMenMike?

'I saw a Dead-head sticker on Cadillac'

It was the baby boomers and their children(i.e most of us on here I think) who instigated this culture change - anybody remember Punk?

please grow down all!

I'm for the grumpy old men!

Well, I am one, so I would be.

"Grumpy old men" is just a way of 'explaining away' good old-fashioned common sense

The baby boomers did do a lot of damage. How did that come about if the previous generation was the great WWII.?

That'll be the wonderful Kayvan Novak, who isn't half as famous as he should be.

Here's a clip of the Broadbanding Providings: http://www.fonejacker.tv/broadband.shtml
And the Upgradeings: http://www.fonejacker.tv/upgradeings.shtml(this is the ring-dings one)

My policy exactly.

A contractor who's doing some work on my house actually had the nerve to tell me that I needed to set up voicemail on my cell phone. Just what I need: another place to check for messages, as if the office and my home phone weren't enough. I told he'd be allowed to "instruct" me on setting up my cell phone when I could tell him how to run his business.

Somebody I know put it well on a trip to India, saying that "India wants to be the USA".
Umm, please ask this person not to generalise. Most of us don't want to be, including me (and u, I think).
Those who do, even though in millions, are approx 3%. That's not a very large number.

Same 3%.

I bought a cheap mobile phone. It has sixteen ringtones, but not that normal ringing one.

I am seriously thinking of using the clucking morning rooster.
As long as u don't put on 'Sare Jahan Se Achchha'.
What a good thing they haven't started with 'Jana Gana Mana' yet. I'm guessing that wud be illegal under our laws.
