I am heading to Mumbai in a couple of weeks and will keep an eye on this. Does anyone have an example of the meter to how much they paid? Or even better, a rate card to give some examples?

Got this link from the Mumbai Traffic Police website, so should be authentic:

TAXI TARIFF CARD FOR GREATER MUMBAI WITH EFFECT FROM 1ST AUGUST, 2009

Some salient points:

(a) Minimum fare for 1.6 kms ……………… Rs. 14.00
(b) fare for Subsequent Km ………………… Rs. 9.00
(c) 25% additional fare for journey from 12.00 midnight to 05.00 a.m
(d) Luggage charges Rs. 6.00 for every package of personal luggage other than a
briefcase, handbag, attaché case on a bag not less than 60 X 40 cms in dimension carried by the passenger. Height of personal luggage should not be more than 45 cm.

The chart shows the meter reading vis-a-vis the actual payout that you should make. Please keep a copy handy, and best wishes.

Thumbs up Five-star auto driver

When going from Mumbai center to the airport, I usually take the train from Churchgate Sta. to Vile Parle and then an auto to the airport. Upon arrival at the VP station during my most recent exit from Mumbai, I engaged an auto from an uncle for what I thought was 50rs. (a bit high, I thought, but I was not in the mood to haggle and it was rush hour). Upon arrival at the Int'l terminal I gave the auto driver a 50 rs. note thinking the bill was settled. He produced 35 rs. in notes and handed them back to me. Not wanting any bad karma, especially for my long journey home, I ask him about it. He said the fare was 15 rs. It was very noisy in the street by the Vile Parle station so I misunderstood 15 for 50. I tried to give him the 50 just because he was such a sweetheart. He wouldn't have it, so we settled on something inbetween. This man belongs in one of the 'Incredible India' commercials one sees. Fortunately I have many stories similar to this one from my many visits to such a great country.
