I once stayed in a hotel in India, and after 3 days of no cleaning I went down to the desk to see what was up. There was only one key to the room and I was taking it out every day.

I've never had anything stolen. I will sometimes hide my laptop if the place looks dodgy.

omg...I've gotta get middle class travel outta my head.

The rooms don't lock from the inside?? ... holy poop! Guess I'll get 2 of those alarmy things.

No cleaning staff ... wow, guess that's how they keep the cost down... I don't mind changing my own sheets etc.

I saw a photo of a hotel room, that had a "slide-bolt padlock" type lock on the wardrobe ... you could lock up everything before leaving the room... I'd like one of those please.

Those budget rooms aren't looking so good now...

The no cleaning staff was because I had the key and they couldn't get in. But yeah, I've stayed in Rs 250 a night rooms where you don't get daily cleaning.

Once I was sitting at my laptop wearing nothing but shorts at about midnight and someone just walked into the room. "Did you call housekeeping?" That was at an expensive Indian hotel

I'd rather take care of the room myself than have strangers touching my things... so I'd like the room to just have one key.

I'm planning on staying in the same place for 2 months, so maybe they'll change the sheets and clean it on a weekly basis.

For Rs250, I wouldn't expect it to come with a maid...

Absolutely - theft is uncommon, but just a few weeks ago in Bangalore I left my bag unattended in an unlocked room while I checked in and the house-boys helped themselves to some minor electronics (clearly hoping I would not notice as I was leaving next day)- I couldn't be bothered making a fuss.

They were quick and they were slick - had to admire their modus.
