India is no more risky than anywhere else with regards to lugging expensive photo/video equipment around. It does, however, pose some extra challenges for the equipment itself with regards to extremes of temperature, dust, water etc. As has been mentioned, limiting the risk of dirt or moisture getting at the sensor of an SLR by avoiding lens changes is a good idea, as is using a body with a self-cleaning sensor (e.g. Canon Rebel XTi or 40D), coupled to weatherproofed lenses (e.g. the Canon L series). At the very least, make sure you have a good camera bag with a proper fitting rain/dust cover (e.g. Think Tank, Lowe Pro). A good option for a "walking around" camera is the Pentax Optio W30, which is dust and water proof (even rated for underwater photography). You can also hide it in a pocket to avoid those weasels who are always running around touting camera tickets.

Do carry it along to capture out of the world images in India. You had better forget petty incidents that happens rarely.
