Hm. Matter of perception again you'd think. Contrary to some reports here to that effect, I really don't see men in India peeing all over the place all the time. Maybe it's because I hail from the Sodom and Gomorrah known as Amsterdam, where it's not uncommon either (yet hardly seen all day long either). I certainly wouldn't interpret it to be anything of a come-on no, or otherwise of the person wishing to "expose" themselves; but then, hey, I'm a man, and as we all know we never get harassed by anyone.
I'd been thinking again by-the-by of, let's say, the stereotypical American living a pretty secluded life, transporting themselves mostly by car and such. Yes, it's a stereotype (and sorry to pick Americans again, the example just easily springs to mind. I'm not on about the nationality here, it could pertain to any number of peoples), but as stereotypes go, I hear even some "alternative" friends of mine there live that way, taking the car indeed to do some shopping three blocks down the road. In consequence, generally mingling with one's peers a lot of the time one presumes, and so on. Now picture said stereotypical, let's say not American but pretty insulated modern human being then, and put them smack-bang in the middle of a "developing" country (or in The Bronx or an Amsterdam new town ghetto, for all I care), where all of life and humanity still takes place pretty much bam in-your-face. With physical closeness not to mention signs of everyday bodily functions and processes all around, yikes. Yes, one can well imagine how the person will be left a little flabbergasted, maybe scared even; and perhaps being prone to interpreting much of it as being somehow related to, or directed at, that person in question, when in fact it mostly isn't. So, yes, a lot of these little culture shocks will have everything to do with where we're coming from, won't they.

Yes. I agree wholeheartedly with this post, Mach. In fact, you don't have to go as far as India to be culturally shocked. There is just as much peeing in the street in Paris. Nobody cares. I was amazed when I first went there in the seventies. Nowadays I don't even notice it. So when you are accustomed to seeing something it does not strike you as odd.

LOL, Nick. Bhindi = okra (a vegetable, or fruit it seems in fact), or in Hindi anyway I think (hm, I find indications now it stems from the Tamil really. Often referred to as "lady's fingers" in India & perhaps some other countries.) Bindi = the forehead decoration

Looks like I must be weird, Mach. I mean, if that stereotype of yours was intended for my contemplation then it was certainly not made to measure.

Revolting?
It's just a bit of flesh, for god's sake! What, and how much, we have to cover ourselves up, is a totally cultural thing anyway. There are many parts of the world (including some of India) where the women go bare chested: I'm not going to go there and accuse them of flashing at me. If you were coming at this from the hygiene angle, I'd be more inclined to agree. |

Oh, that revolting... well, yes... and I have to admit that I have some guilty feelings if I stop to think that it might not even rain for weeks
