Hi, I have browsed through IndiaMike quite a few times before but I didn't really think I would finally register because of this reason.

Trying to keep this short. My parents have travelled to India few times now and have made friends on their journeys.
Some have been genuine and I have enjoyed hearing those stories but now I'm feeling really bad after hearing the recent events.

My parents got pretty close to someone they have met on two different trips and now that person is asking for them to send money.
Story is generic "relative in trouble" scam where he is claiming that his mother needs a surgery and he can't afford it.
My parents have already given money while they were there and now he's trying to get even more. Nice even sum of 20000 rps.

I feel really bad for my parents because of this situation.
I would like to hear how common these scams are and if people have come across similar stories & scams.
Not for myself but just to show my mother who can't help to ask those "What if?" questions.

Asking for the doctor's phone number/email ID and the hospital details/ saying you will only pay to the hospital once you are convinced will weed out most cases of fraud.

The chances that an Indian 'friend' made on a couple of trips is trying to scam a foreigner with a 'relative sick' story should be approximately 99 percent.

20000 is not a large sum of money to raise in India for medical stuff even for relatively lesser well-off people. But he is trying to use your folks as a revenue stream with regular smallish amounts, I would bet.

This is computer generated drivel. No signature is required.

I'm sure that there are those that "collect" tourists, and have a begging-letter production line.

I'm also sure that there are those who agonise over whether they know someone well enough to ask.

What's tough is working out which is which.

I agree with another poster here, just ask for more detailed information of the doctor/hospital etc. Tell them you'll only send the money to the hospital.
