Hi there,

My friend has just returned from his trip to Delhi.

He ordered a bottle of beer at the airport. The price on the menu was 350 INR. However, the price on the bill was 600 INR without any explanation. It is a steep increase against the advertised price.

I want to check if this is an usual practice in India (ie charging higher prices on a bill than advertised prices or on the menu). If this happens, what is the best solution for fighting it?

Thank you very much.

Plus plus plus, taxes etc. All airports are rip offs. Be prepared if you're thirsty.

In case the price on the bill varies from the price mentioned on the Menu, the customer has full right to lodge complaint.

Did your friend do this? If not, he/she may raise complaints at feedback.igiairport@gmrgroup.i n .

Was it at that sports-thingy bar? They add so much taxes it became the most expensive small Heineken I ever had... Like your friend I should have read the fineprint...
As for "general practice": it will be indicated on the menu if taxes apply.

It is same at Kolkata airport also. A glass of CCD (Cafe coffee day) chocolate drinks cost around 250 INR at airport, same item costs INR 170 at CCD outside airport.

That means they are taking some special taxes at airport, what is it called?

It seems these items are sold at premium. Even samosas are sold at premium at T3.

And I don't agree to believe that taxes are one of the components which increases the price.

A form of "luxury tax" I guess. If you can afford to travel by plane, you can afford an overpriced drink, goes the (il)logical argument.

In stead of "tax" we may call it "charges" as all the money goes to owner's coffer.

If you can pay premium at multiplexes for popcorn and drinks, so can at airports also...

The scandal at Kolkata airport was not only the price of the drinks (even tea and coffee are fantastically overpriced there), but the fact that there is (was ?) only one place to buy them, and that too in the international departure lounge.

Has this changed ?

There is many places to buy food inside kolkata airport now (I don't know when you visited there last time), but the price seems very much overpriced.
Bought 2 piece of small radhavallabhi for 100 rs at early morning for breakfast and that was smelling so bad, must be of previous day!

Can you tell me if dry foods are allowed inside flight also? Can someone carry some chips packet, nuts, chocolate etc inside flight?
