Yes, never prepay but always pre-agree price. Hasn't failed me yet.

Sometimes the driver will stop for fuel, and sometimes ask for the fare so he can pay for the fuel. I've never had a problem happen with that.

The question is, do you want to spend 10 minutes of every journey haggling over a few Rs?
Ask the driver to put on the meter if you want a metered ride. But maybe then he will tell you that the meter is broken, or take you the long way. I found that walking up to an auto and stating my price was the easiest way to get to my destination. No hassles, no stress and more time to enjoy my holiday. Give them a tip if you are in a good mood. Putting it all into perspective, we are talking less than $2 for some of these rides. Not worth stressing over. |
