post office scam in Hampi, Karnataka
A female postal employee in Hampi has quite a nice scam going which cost me over 7,000 rs. And she has the cooperation of the local police as well. When you go in to ship parcels, you are quoted the rates. When you get back from the tailor who pointlessly sews up your packages (for a mere 2,000 rs for 7 5kg packages), you will meet her. She will have replaced the fraudulently friendly male clerk who gave you your original price quote and helped you find the tailor and who you PAID. This demonic woman will now insist you never paid the first clerk. Moreover, she will refuse you the ground rate and insist that she has the right to demand you pay the vastly more expensive air rate. She will also state that once the packages are sewn up they are "government property" and you can't have them back! And now she nails you : having no other choice, you now have to pay for BOTH rates on the same package. And if you say anything about the fact she is STILL SHIPPING them marked at the cheap surface rate and POCKETING the difference on the air rate you were forced to pay she will become extremely angry. Don't bother calling the cops, they will threaten you with arrest for "insulting a government official" for nothing more than calling this vile thief A THIEF! Then she and her whole extended clan will mock you to your face and laugh long and hard while they count your money. This woman literally spit in my face, hawked one right into my EYE! and then she laughed triumphantly... AVOID THE POST OFFICE IN HAMPI AT ALL COSTS!

The Post Office is quite serious about complaints made to the proper authorities. A few years back, I had a complaint regarding a misappropriated parcel, and made a complaint at the Central Government grievances website (the local post office was not responsive) and was pleasantly surprised to get responses from both an Under Secretary of the Government and the Post Master General, after which the local PO got their act together. The Chief Minister is not the right person to complain to, as IndiaPost is a Central Government department.
Please do me a favour and register complaints at: Complaint registration site for IndiaPost: http://www.indiapost.gov.in/Netscape...gistration.asp If no response from them, or even parallely, you can register a grievance at the Dept. of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances website: http://darpg-grievance.nic.in/ |

Whilst this sounds very bad, I am a little confused...
You paid the post office before getting the parcels wrapped? This doesn't sound like normal procedure at all: payment should be made when everything is done, finished, and exact final weight can then be known, labels will be printed or stamps given to fix. If anyone robbed you, I wonder if it was the first, supposedly helpful, guy? Have never had anything but help from postal people here, with deliveries, despatch, holding post while away on holiday, redirecting to new home, etc. Even made friends with the guy in the tiny one-man office near our old house where we bought stamps and sent money orders and stuff; still keep in touch.

I am confused too about what happened.
And I second manojb on post office complaints. One experience, lost parcel, traced within 24 hours after I reported at the GPO on the phone. Two people replied by mail to me asking me to confirm all was ok. |

The Main Rule: Always get a receipt.

I asked for a receipt!
They refuse to give receipts. You are confused? Has anyone ever spit in your eye? Its not an experience you have to ponder long and hard. Karnataka is known to be the single most corrupt state in all of India. Your experience elsewhere isn't relevant.

yes, it is.
http://www.karnataka.com/govt/corruption/
http://fightcorruption.wikidot.com/ private sector employees earning rs.10000 monthly income are finding it hard to meet ends , whereas many of the government officials earning lesser salary than that are leading luxurious lifestyles , how ? recently in the last week Karnataka lokayukta raided , seized illegal wealth of corrupt police , transport officials. The corruption is wide spread in public service including Karnataka lokayukta , central vigilance commission & CBI itselves. In 2006, when Karnataka lokayukta arrested 5 corrupt police officials & taking them in police jeep , 2 corrupt police officials escaped like petty criminals in cinematic manner. There are vast number of corrupt public servants who are continuing their crimes unabetted due to their sharing arrangements with their higher ups. Only a minute number of corrupt are being booked, by the efforts of honest few in Karnataka lokayukta , CVC & CBI . The paradox is that the government instead of legally prosecuting those criminals – corrupt officials , is sitting over their files for years & have reinstated , promoted tainted officials. http://evoiceofhumanrightswatch.word...aka-lokayukta/ Corruption, delay need to be adressed: Karnataka CJ 27 October 2007 Corruption and delay in disposal of cases were the main reasons for the people losing their faith in the Institution of Law, Karnataka Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph said. Inaugurating the permanent Lok Adalath here today, the Chief Justice admitted that as like as other institutions, corruption is existing in the Indian judiciary also. Referring the comments of Lok Adalat Justice Hegde that eradication of corruption might not possible but it could be controlled, Justice Cyriac felt that corruption would exist in human managed institutions. He lamented that delay in delivering justice and corruption were the two evils that had brought bad name to the Indian judiciary. http://www.indlawnews.com/53073682D6...5B270B6090 2E ETC, ETC, ETC! You can't get a birth certificate in Karnataka w/o paying a 10,000 rs bribe! The same goes for any other piece of civil service paperwork. They aren't just preying on tourists, they are robbing their own people too. |

Why am I being moderated on my own thread? I just posted piles of evidence as to well known and infamous levels of corruption in Karnakata, India. This is out and out censorship of unpopular opinions. Sorry to bust your rose colored glasses, but India is wildly corrupt.

Maybe adesh can justify his 'most corrupt' State statement, so far all I can see is that there is corruption in Karnataka, which I haven't disputed.
Adesh, you are aware that Post Offices are central and not State Government, aren't you? Whatever. |

It is official. Bangalore is the most corrupt district .
BANGALORE: It is official. Bangalore is the most corrupt district in the country's fourth most corrupt State. A report prepared by the Lokayukta, N. Venkatachala, has put Bangalore Urban district on the top in the district-wise list of corruption cases booked.
The bad news comes close on the heels of the much talked about Transparency International list, where Karnataka was ranked fourth. Mr. Venkatachala has prepared the report after studying the number of cases booked by the Lokayukta Police under the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act between 2001 (the year he took charge) and June 2005. While 135 cases were booked in Bangalore (Urban) district, 22 cases were registered in Bangalore (Rural) district. Of the other districts, Belgaum stood second with 42 cases; followed by Tumkur (35); Mysore (31); Kolar (22); Bellary and Dakshina Kannada (20); Bijapur, Chitradurga, Hassan and Mandya (17); Chikmagalur, Gulbarga and Dharwad (16); Shimoga (15); Raichur (14); Bagalkot and Davangere (10); Uttara Kannada and Kodagu (9); Bidar and Koppa (8); Haveri (6); Gadag (3); and Chamarajnagar (1). No cases were booked in Udupi district. Implications Asked about the implications of the study, Mr. Venkatachala said: "This definitely is an indication that more corruption cases are found in Bangalore, as this place is the centre of power. You do not find any case in Udupi as the people there desist from giving money to get their work done." This report was prepared after the recent meeting of the Lokayukta with the Superintendents in-charge of various districts. "I had asked them to complete investigation of all pending cases booked by them under the Prevention of Corruption Act, before booking fresh cases. This was because I had received complaints about some Lokayukta officials going slow on investigation, influenced by officials caught under the Act," Mr. Venkatachala told The Hindu. Status of investigation He said all the Superintendents had completed their investigation of all the cases booked under the Act and were now booking fresh cases. "As I am handicapped in using the powers under the Karnataka Loktayukta Act, I am making the Lokayukta Police to use the provisions of the Act to book cases of mal-administration," he said. To strengthen the Lokayukta Police, Mr. Venkatachala said he had recommended posting officers of the rank of Superintendent of Police in all the 27 districts. |
