net cafe security

hi just mentioning to everyone who may not be super computer savvy and/or is used to using Macs, that there are some real security issues using cybercafes in India and beyond. The simplest security flaw is built into Microsoft Internet Explorer and is a 'function' called 'autocomplete' ....

so if you are even mildly concerned about having somebody or many many people knowing your login and password for your email.. try this on for size EVERY time you sit down to use a computer.... (this is the instructions for IE v.5, but should be similar for other versions)

At the top of the screen Click on -> Tools

from the menu that pops up, Click on -> Internet Options

There will be a tab at the top labelled -> Content

Click on that....

Then click on the button called -> Autocomplete

and then uncheck ALL the checkboxes...

otherwise.. all your logins and passwords are open to all who wish to see!

i have already accidentally gotten into a dozen peoples yahoo mails already in the past month.

so safe emailing!

Good post, just to add to that, never I repeat never enter your credit card details on a cybercafe computer!!
Little programs called key loggers are a real hazard, these programs log every key stroke you make and those ****** become 561135 or your creditcard number, plus your name and your address, in fact all the info needed to commit credit card fraud!!! Be careful!! key loggers a guide

Or with my netscape, it is Edit-Preferences-Click on History and Clear it and Click on Location bar and clear it and then click on Smart browsing and disable auto complete. Do this at every cafe session before you leave the computer.

hmm, right. I forgot to log off regularly at a cybershop last winter and noticed that I only needed to type 'ind' and the site popped up with me already logged in. So if some unusually strange posts show up in my name some day, you probably should be wary.
