- But after a week and half in Hawaii and the beaches, I forgot this attitude of the airlines.

Underlying lesson, whether it's Delhi, or Hawaii, bad behaviour towards tourists is bad behaviour.
Ugh, sorry to hear about your experience here, it's usually not like that. I am glad that you got over the troubles and enjoyed yourself. If you are ever stuck on O'ahu again, PM me if you need help dealing with Honolulu- it's a lovely town once you get over the urban nature of it.

I've taken the EATS bus several times; it's great!

The only people in India I can't get on with is taxi drivers ..... they always seem to be trying it on.

Don't let them spoil it for you - they are a minority.

I've managed to avoid taxis for 3 months now. I find the Bombay auto's pretty good, I've bought a motorbike, the trains are a blast ... and erm .... I have a (big) car and driver

Ex pats ..... Overpaid and over here!
Well I am keen to avoid using taxis in Mumbai. Can you get into town from the airport by public transport?

Baaahhaaaahahaaa

Man, it's amazing how reliable those taxi drivers are for messing with dazed and confused people getting off an umpteen hour flight. One time the driver literally tried to snatch the prepaid slip from my hands.

My remedy is to have the hotel send a driver who will wait for you at the airport exit. Now that we travel with a youngster this is only way I'll go. Not really interested in getting into a fistfight in front of my son. In the past it was a real possibility.

Shashank - not all drivers know where they are going - the worst are the green and yellow, black cabs ones, and rickshaw drivers are so ignorant at times. This has been my experience - a contnual stop and ask someone else. I always have a map of Delhi with me, so even if the driver doesn't know usually someone nearby does.
Back to OP - a good case for not using pre-paid Police taxi at airport. As Shashank has posted elsewhere in Radio Cab thread, these are the ones to use. There are pre-paid booths at both International and Domestic Airports.

Directions

We found that everywhere we went, drivers would claim to know where we were going and then would start asking directions when we got into the vicinity. They generally got pretty good directions from locals, so I wouldn't worry too much if they do it. On the other hand, it pays to find out what nearby landmarks are; you can always go the rest of the way in a rickshaw if necessary. Personally, I'd still pay the driver--apparently, it's not unusual to not know where things are.

Sorry to hear about your experience; it does seem to happen often. As a frequent visitor to New Delhi, I have come to learn basic auto fares and to be quite honest, expect to be overcharged to a certain extent. I am not going to haggle over 10-20 Rs, but when it's getting into the hundreds, well that's another story. To familiarize yourself with auto and taxi fares in New Delhi, visit www.dehligovt.nic.in for revised auto fares or www.dehlitrafficpolice.nic.in for information about filing complaints. There is a downloadable "traffic complaint card" which I have flashed to auto drivers from time to time and an chart of the SMS scheme for reporting overcharging or harassment by auto or taxi drivers. Recently an auto driver tried to overcharge me by a significant amount even though we had already agreed on a price, but once I took out my cell phone he became very nervous and reverted to his original price.
