It's a clever one, and especially as there is no illegality as such, he's just being rather slow in getting the notes out of the right compartment in the drawer ....

I've had he same thing happen many times, and not just in train stations, they could make a fortune in London where everyone is rushing, but I tend to relax and slow down in India.

I have this sort-of British, sort-of embarrassed-about-money thing.

I never check bills. To count out the change feels like accusing the guy who just gave it to me of cheating.

Mrs N has no such silly scruples, and checks everything, even if it means the mistake is in our favour and we end up paying more, as happened with the guy who did the heat-reflective coating on our roof last week!

Coupled with my absent mindedness, it probably means that I have often been ripped off --- but I have have also often experienced people calling me back for the change I forgot! And my best example of this was a driver who dropped us at our house; I was wondering why he was still there when we'd finished chatting to a neighbour, "Look what you have given me!" --- in the low evening light I had counted out 500s instead of 100s.

But, despite these occasions which have improved my faith in human nature, I would approach any transaction to do with autorickshaws with caution and suspicion.

Very common one!! Though they have never swapped bills to me, or told me I did not gave enough, I have not been able to get correct change instantly in that particular shop once, despite many visits already. Always he gives too little change, always I have to do the math for him, he will give me a few more rupees back and I again patiently recount for him and tell him how much more change I want fom him before I leave. Afterwards I always accuse him of being a thief and a bad man in Hindi and he always gives me the look... "Me a bad man? ... Hah! You are the female drinking beer, lady!" It's almost like our little ritual now :-)

And then I leave.. wishing I knew of another shop to go to.

Every other person I know who bought beer in this shop told the same story...

Around Holi he suddenly wanted to sell beer only for 5 Rs more than the MRP.. I did pay it, I had no option really, but I still wonder whether this is a common Holi/festival thing, or a smart way of making some extra bucks of the ignorant? Anyone who knows?

I have to add maybe that there have also been many occasions that I got too much change from shopkeepers in India... And left them with a mixture of happiness, gratitude and ebarrassmnet as I handed it back...

I had a similar experience at BKK airport in Jan 2003. I gave 500 bhat note to the immigration officer for the "Visa on arrival". He said that I have given him only 100 bhat note. I stood my ground and and made sure he returned the balance amount.

No give him a 50 & insist that it was 100/- they will not have a 500 in the money box but will certainly have 100 & 50 for you to be able to confuse him.
