Indian state bank ATM not dispensing my money.

I withdrew 11000 rupees from the India State bank ATM this afternoon near palolem and everything was going well, my money sounded like it was counting but then the a slip came out saying it there is a problem. I checked my online bank statement and the 11000 rupees has been taken form my acount. Went into the the state ban who gave me a frosty reception and they told me the ATM only had 7000 rupees and to come back at 6pm tonight so they can cound the days takings. Now I'm crapping myself because thats the only bit of money I have left untill I travel home on the 7th Jan. What can I do if they say the ATM gave the money? I'm really worrid sick. If they don't give me my money could I go to the papers? You're advice would be welcome.

Relax. The bank won't cheat you. It is the largest public sector bank in India.

They will tally the cash and your problem will be sorted out. However, you may have to push them to do so if they are taking too long.

Do not offer to pay anything to anybody. (Just saying that assuming you are a foreigner, so if you are not, ignore this).

I heard this can happen with any bank, they just need to count the money and then they will be able to let you have yours...

I spent the best of of one hour waiting for them to tally the cash and they said they have no surplus money and it must be a problem with my bank (natwest) in England so I rang them and they say the 11000 has been deducted from my bank account. State bank of india have no record of 11000 being taken out from my card only a slip which says something like sorry can't go on. The bank manager tried ringing other branches for advice but it was 630pm and no body was picking up the phone. So my money is in limbo someplace. I'm going back first thing Friday and demanding they short this mess out becuase I have 300 rupees to my name. Hopfully I will have confermation of my bank by then to say I have withdrew 11000 and that State bank of india are at failt.

Raise hell Mr Dave,
You got the slip saying there is a problem.
Be very insisting something be done about it on the spot.
Don't accept excuses, like maybe tomorow....
Good luck.

Odd. It should be a simple matter for the ATM cash to be tallied. The fact that they say that there is no surplus money at the ATM is worrying.

Hang on to the slip, and, yes, raise hell.

The slip was a standed peace of paper and I'v kind of miss-placed it. They have the information on the atm bank roll which basically says the same as the slip, nothing on that ATM bank roll says anything about my 11000rupees which I suppose it a good thing because they can't say that the ATM as dispensed my money and I'm lying, they have it somewhere in there system and I have confermation to say I withdrew that amount from that bank and the time and reference number from my online banking which willy tally with there's hopfully.

I'm worrid that they are trying to steal my money.

It looks like they think the transaction has been cancelled, which means that the ATM balance would tally, but that the transaction was presented and paid, and not reversed, at the British bank.

Raising hell is certainly in order, but do make an up-to-date check that the amount has not not been subsequently credited before doing it. If it hasn't, a screen-print of your bank statement (if you are looking at it online) would be a useful thing to take with you.

Beware of anyone trying to shift the responsibility on to you. Do not accept that you have to do anything, contact anybody else, produce anything else --- insist that it is their problem and just don't move out of the manager's office until you have your money.

In my recent experience of Indian banks, most of the private bank 'managers' are marketing people, and that is all they really know. Out of four state-owned bank managers I've met recently, one was an idiot; the other three were more like what a bank manager used to be like in my youth. One shook my hand for saying that I thought several years behind a bank counter was more useful to a bank manager than an MBA in marketing. I think I'd rather be having the conversation that you have to have in a state bank than a private one.

Start with a smile, and the assumption that all is well, and a thank you very much for sorting out your problem, call the guy sir --- and take it in whatever direction it needs to go from there.

Good luck.

<cross-posted>

I have had idiots in the Indian banking system loose thousands of pounds of my money on poor investment 'management'. Nobody yet tried to steal any, and I really, really doubt that this is happening.

For crying out loud Mr Dave.
You are saying you lost the slip too.
The only proof in your hand something went wrong.
Do you have a copy of the banks transcript?
No? Then it will be very hard for you if they dont act out of mercy.

I personally only had very good experience with the state bank of India. Maybe it will work out fine for you.
The best to you, good luck.

Just a thought, are you certain that they checked the correct ATM?

Good point Haylo.

On another note, Mr Dave might be Boston Harry in disguise?

Was just a thought, think about it though.
Similarities? No? I for one recognised some.
I hope I'm wrong.
