1, a woman doesn't get touched an average of 7 times a day, not unless she's walking around wearing only her knickers (and she's totally free to walk around in her knickers if she pleases, women’s rights and all that). 2, the succession of Indian men rejoicing in making their sincerest apologies. 3, I just don't believe the story, not from an experienced traveller. ![]()

| I think Irma is long gone....and on to more woman-friendly countries (in her opinion!)

| Rarely, on any website forum is a newbie's first post rants absorbed without some sort of a credibility issue. On Indiamike it's not nor shouldn't be any different. As in most places in life you earn your stripes with/through seniority - Cyberspace especially so, IMO, because of the anonymity of it all.

| I have to say that I agree with Steven_Ber - I just don't believe it! For all you prospective female solo travellers out there, I have spend a combined 15 months in India (from 4 trips there). I travelled all over the country and can count on one hand the number of times that I was touched inappropriately. I got eve teased by a teenager in a crowded Delhi market. I can think of a few other 'weird' experiences with men but certainly not enough to have deterred me from travelling alone (obviously, I went back 3 times after my first trip. haha) Yes, men stare and sometimes crowd around you at train stations, or gather around your train seat and stare at you. It does get pretty annoying but the rewards far outweight the negatives. Oh, and I figured out a great way to get the men to stop standing around you, just go plop yourself down next to some women. They won't question why you are doing it (they know), and they'll yell at the men bugging you. It's great. Be mindful of where you are, dress appropriately, use common sense and carry yourself confidently. You definitely will experience some harassment and possibly some groping but 10 times a day???? I just don't buy it. oh yeah, it IS kinda dirty in some places, so if you can't wrap your head around that then you will be unhappy. Fortunately, I'm kind of a slob so it doesn't really bother me. ha ha. |

Not that I really need to explain why I laughed and at whom and for what reason, thought I'd still do you a favor... So go check out the post numbers... Cheers...!

| Apologies if I was a too hasty and indeed there are lots of apologetic, sympathetic responses. My point is more about denying the problem when in North India, in particular, inappropriate touching of women happens. Whatever you are wearing. |

| No one is denying the problem. I dont think any of the posters said women are not harassed at all in India. They were sceptical about the extent of the harassment which the OP reported(considering she calls herself a seasoned traveller). And many have said that she could have avoided part of the harassment had she travelled with a higher budget. |

My points were about why this woman was allegedly everyone's play thing, why her? why so many times? And it was in that context that I asked what she was wearing, as the only way her story would make sense is if she was walking around in only her knickers. And if she was, hell, I might of joined in all the fun. ![]()

| Where are you out there in cyberspace, Irma? I agree with Peak that her credibility is at stake because we (IM-ers) don't know her. And, what makes me suspicious, is that she claimed to have travelled in many continents. Anyhow, what does it matter if she is now living happily in Ghana or Togo (no disrespect to those countries) as long as she doesn't have to suffer the indignities of our outpourings here.

| Apology directed towards you and the other replies who didn't deserve my comment so thanks for accepting it I put it down to a lack of chocolate, which has now been remedied, and helps get what is not so good here back into perspective. [Hope YOU are having a pleasant stay...!] My stay? Never pleasant, well apart from the current climate. Brilliant, amazing, best thing I've ever done and sometimes infuriating.
